Nevada City Employes : Get Salary Increases A resolution raising all fulltime city employes’ salaries by 21/2 per cent was passed unanimously Monday evening by the Nevada City city council. The salary increases go into effect Jan. 1, 1968, according to the resolution. The raises bring the employes' salaries more in line with what is being paid by other agencies for the same type of work, said City Manager Beryl Robinson, and "I. think it is a necessary thing." The city has not been in any real financial trouble this year, he said, and the number of fulltime employes has dropped from 23, when he took office just over two years ago, to the present 17, Business licenses in the city have dropped $375 for the first five months of this fiscal year, said Robinson, and the sales tax is only $30 over the same five-month period of 1966, Court fines are down $1800, other revenue is up $1300. The total revenue for the five month period is down $849 over the same period last year, he told the council, yet by holding expenses down the city can afford the salary raises. Mayor Arch Mcfherson who conducted the meeting appointed an airport committee to study the financial prospects of the city's at present nonfunctioning airport. Appointed to the committee were councilmen Joe Day and McPherson, Bruno Benuzzi, Dean Deniz, Roy Harris, Raymond Jeffers, Leo Angelini and ardi for garbage pickup and disposal for the next 10 years was passed unanimously, Gagliardi will pick up garbage at the city hall and city park and for all eity customers who desire such service at least once a week -and pay the city $100 a year, on Jan, 2 of each year, the contract specifies. The new agreement goes into effect Jan. 1, 1968, The documentary stamp tax was adopted by Nevada City when the ordinance imposing the tax on real property sales was passed by the three councilmen present, McPherson, Rankin and Day. The tax becomes effective Jan. 1, 1968, and takes over a tax formerly charged by the federal government but which lapses as of the end of 1967, The county will collect the tax and pay the city's portion into the city fund. The legal question of whether the present wheel and frame shop on Clark Street was a nonconforming use within a R-2 (multiple family dwelling) zone was answered by City Attorney William Wetherall in the affirmative, Art Hudson, new owner of the property, wants to open a body shop in the building and asked for the legal determination of the property's zoning. Hudson will have to request a variancé, said Wetherall. A photograph of fire truck driver Ted Signourney with one of the city’s 1880 fire plugs published weeks ago in The Union brought numerous requests for
the fire plugs, Robinson told the city council. Robinson said, "what historical value do they have?" "If there is none I'll sell them," The council agreed to try and find out what the old hydrants are worth as. historical pieces and then offer to sell them for that price. The city still has nine in use and 13 in all. The ones now in use will be replaced by new hydrants as quickly as the city can afford them, said Robinson, The city scheduled an adjourned meeting for Dec, 28 and will ask members of the planning commission to be present.
