A NEW CHRIS
White Fir In Small Park Decorated
By Lights Taken From Lost Sequoia
In Honor Of 1965 Christmas Season
Nevada City has a new living
Christmas tree, not as high or as
beloved as the old sequoia on
Sacramento St., now torn down
for the freeway, But it is a
beautiful tree that is growing -and can grow in the affections of
the town,
The new community tree is the
60 -foot-tall white fir in the small
park on Union St,
Last week, it was decorated
with lights-the same lights which
last year adorned the century old
_ Sequoia for the last time,
Just who planted the "new" tree
or when it was planted are questions for which no one seems to
have definite answers, But Elza
Kilroy, unofficial custodian of
the lights for the "old" tree,
thinks it may be about 40 to 45
years old, His estimate isa rough
one, based on a memory that it
was planted a few years after he
was married,
There is general agreement that
the tree was planted by the Native
Daughters, who owned the lot on
which it grows, Mrs, Robert
Hopkins, secretary of the local
chapter of the Native Daughters,
says the chapter made a park out
of the lot after deciding not to
build a lodge there,
The park is now owned by the
U. S. Forest Service which, according to Tahoe Forest supervisor
Henry Branagh, bought it over
30 years ago, The park is main-tained by the Nevada City
Women's Civic Club,
It was probably Kilroy who first
made the suggestion ea rly this
year that the stately fir be used
as the new Christmas tree, The
lighting job was a chamber of
commerce project, with a strong
assist from the city crew and the
fire department,
Jim Abrahamson and Melo Pello
actually strung up the lights,
according to city manager Beryl
Robinson, and Ted Sigourney
picked them up from Kilroy, who
had sadly stored them away after
MAS TREE
The engineers of "Progress"
Seem to have their eyes on
Nevada City's new Christmas tree,
now that the century-old sequoia
on Sacramento St,, the former
community tree, has been cut
down for the freeway, It seems
that the new tree, andthecharming little park where it grows,
may also be sliced down and
bulldozed away, Why? To provide parking spaces, to replace
those taken by the freew ay. This
Possibility came out at the
chamber of commerce parking
study meeting Monday, Dr,
Jackson Faustman, engineer and
Parking expert, instructed the
committee to check into the
possibility of using the small park
as a parking lot,
NEVADA CITY'S NEW CHRISTMAS TREE is the white fir on the

anew living Christmas tree after the traditional holiday tree, a
was lost to the freeway century -old Sequoia on Sacramento Street,
early this year,

Spring St.
Nevada City parking consultant
Jackson Faustman expressed some
preference Monday fora new city
parking lot on Spring St., between
Pine St, and up to and including
the National Hotel parking lot,
Development of this area would
produce 116 parking spaces at a
cost in excess of $1,000 per
space, according to preliminary
estimates,
The new lot would include the..use of both sides of Spring St. for
right-angle curb parking,
Faustman told a breakfast meeting of the chamber of commerce
parking study committee headed
by banker Willard Rose that other
possibilities for parking included
a similar area west of Pine St,
on Spring, the Native Sons lot on
Commercial, and a combination
of the small park on Union St.
with adjoining Alpha Hardware
property,
No development cost figures
were available for the Alpha lot,
but parking unit costs for the
others were higher than those for
the parking lot east of Pine on
Spring.
Police chief Ted Lane asked
whether Faustman would consider
the possibility of using a number
of scattered small lots instead of
one large one, Faustman said
that wasa possibility, with many
pros and cons connected with it,
On the question of financing the
project, committee members
seemed to feel a city bond issue
would be the acceptable form of
financing,
In response to a question from
city councilman Robert Paine,
Faustman estimated that the city
could use 200 new parking spaces,
as a long-range goal,

It has received the ap’ proval of residents and

Wetherall Becomes
Left-Handed Driver
Nevada City attorney William
Wetherall, plagued for some
weeks by a painful shoulder, had
an operation Dec, 10 in Marysville to remove the condition,
and he has recovered sufficiently
to be back at work, The former
pain is reportedly gone, but the
shoulder is still “tight, " causing
the city attorney to be a lefthanded driver forthe time being.
