injustice to any defenseless person

he could walk about the fields,
he filled our place with hurt and
sick wild animals and birds he
would find, bring home and make

God that we were too insensitive
to understand then, Having him
was like a beautiful strain of
muted music that runs through an
otherwise mediocre composition,
And he was so brave, We other
youngsters fibbed often and if the
case seemed to warrant it would
tell downright whopping lies, but
not Fred, He'd stand his ground
and we who knew him never
questioned, And then one day
he left us, and in leaving he
dimmed a light in our lives that
was never quite so bright again,

But this istobe a happy chronicle of our growing up, and Fred
is there, alway€ quietly there.
About five months after Dad
went to Nevada Lester was bom.
Aland I were attending school at
the time and I remember how wé
hurried down the lane that evening
hoping to get in a couple of
games of horseshoes before Al

say anything, and Ai and I left
in a hurry, When we were outside I said, "Well, what do you
think of that?" And Iwas wishing
the Lord had minded His own
business and left us alone, We
were doing fine and now this! Al
said, “He ain't as good looking
asa pupan" he's goin’ to be a lot
of bother.” I answered, “And it
will be me‘ll have to take care
of him, you just see..."
Idid, and Mother saw to it that
it was doneright, Little Fred
looking on anxiously, loved him
from the first. All the lovely
spring evenings atid holidays when
Iwanted desperately to be out
looking for early flowers, I was
deep in the midst of howls, hiccups and burps, not to mention
endless laundry, 1 hardly looked’
at him for several months and
then one day he tooked up at me
and laughed, “I-was his*slave for
life. And I couldn't do enough
for him, Now I look back over
the years and I wonder how any
of us could ever have lived without him,
would have to start his chores,
Wewere met at the gate by Mrs,
Wood who was staying with
Mother for a few days and she
looked so pleased I thought Mr.
Gladding, our old bachelor
neighbor, must have been to see
her, but when she said, “Hurry
dears--the Lord has sent you a
little baby brother, " I guessed I
was wrong. Howls and snuffles
were coming from Mother's room
as we edged our way in, andI
stepped back in repulsion at the
miserable little thing she was
holding on her arm, I just couldn't

Time passed swiftly; soon Lester
was taking a few steps, then he
was walking. Holding him on
her lap one evening, Mother said
wistfully,.“I wish your father
could share his baby days,”
Again I didn't say anything, Remembering Dad's hair-trigger
temper and Lester's howlsI
thought Dad was mighty well off
in Nevada, I hadasneaking idea
that Dad was probably wondering,
after the Browns Valley experience, if Lester would have delinAl and I loved school--the two
mile walk up the lane to the
“little red school house” and Miss
Keith, our first teacher, were
joys indeed, Al got along fine
with the children, Of course he
was beaten up a few times and
gave a few black eyes in return,
Then he settled down to years of
fun and companionship. I wasn't
so lucky. The girls my age
didn't like me, My clothes were
wrong, my unattractive malarial
skin and Indian straight hair
didn't invite admiration, andthat
I skipped 4 grades in the first
year they took as pure insult,
None of it worried me much, I
wasin a wonderland of books and
Iloved the teachers, That
seemed to be enough. From my
first story of a rat that left home
to see the world, to the full set
of Dickens in our school library,
I was a book addict and I went
aroundin a fog most of the time,
peopling my world with characters
