The Red Colt ( cont'd. )
the deadly amanita--a simple
thing when once learned, And
then in November we went for
Oranges, The’caretaker of an
abandoned orange grove a few
miles away soldnavel oranges as
large as grapefruit for twenty five
cents a grainsack--pick them
yourself,
Our turkeys by that time were
huge beautiful things that gobbled
and strutted all day around the
troughs of yellow corn Mother
kept full for them, and we began
to prepare for the picking and
shipping that would start around
Thanksgiving and continue on
until spring.
And believe it or not, picking
the way Mother had us do it was
fun, We picked in the old cabin
made cosy and warm with an iron
heating stove and its kettle of
boiling water that supplied our
coffee breaks, Al and I were
always. competing in everything
we did and the turkey picking
gave us our best chance of the
year, It was once checkers--but
that’s a sad tale, Mother bought
us a checkerboard one Christmas
and for.a while it was great fun,
and then for some reason I
couldn't win a game. He'd sit
there smug-looking and jump
every checker I had until one
evening I went berserk and broke
the checkérboard over his head,
He still swears the checkerboard
was made of oak, but I am sure
it was just heavy pine, Anyway,
us in the cabin every time Mother
opened the kitchen door at the.
house, was beyond description.
I've always thought that working
Christmas day--as we worked-some way made the day better.
The largest orders Mother had was
for turkeys between Christmas and
New Years, so picking that day
was necessary,
Aland Iworked like demons all
day, only taking time off for
coffee, sandwiches and insults,
and at the end of the day we accomplished little more than Fred
who worked right along with us
and even took time out to get
wood for the stove and look out
for Lester,
When the last turkey was picked
and hung in the shed to cool for
packing in the morning, we hied
us to the house to clean up and
change for dinner, I can see it
now as plainly as though it were
yesterday: that old whitewashed
kitchen with the firelight flickering on the walls and the homemade table brave in its white
cloth and bouquet of china lillies
tightly packed in a cracked milk
pitcher,
And those loved faces of long
agosmiling at me around the
table. “How strange it seems
with so much gone of.life and
love, to still live on."
One Christmas stands out in my
memory above all holidays before
or since,
It was about 5 o'clock in the
it was over ten days before my—afternoon of Christmas day, We
black eye faded to green--and I
had to go to school with it.
Mother said, “No more checkers,"
Mother always madea big thing
of our Christmas dinner, working,
two days in advance, between
helping us pick turkeys in the
cabin, so that we might have
everything that istraditional in a
Christmas feast. The biggest
young gobbler on the place was
put in the oven early Christmas
day and around about 4 in the
afternoon the fragrance from that
big turkey, bursting with sage
and onion dressing, that came to
had done a good day's work but
were about through now and ready
to clean up for dinner when old
Lion gave a short gruff bark. I
went tothe cabin door to see who
might be there and looked into
the big brown eyes of a pretty
girl hesitating on the step, “I'm
Irene Downing, your new neighbor
across the fields. I stopped by to
say "Merry Christmas and to ask
you tocome over when you can,"
The dense fog rolling in made
diamonds in her blond hair and I
suddenly wished I wasnicer looking andthere was more about me .
to like, for I liked her on the

instant,
This friendship has lasted
through all of ourlife. Irene had
scarcely reached the gate on the
hill when Mr, Summy came
dashing into the yardé He was
driving one of hisracers, as usual,
but this time he was also leading
a prancing redcolt, “Merry
Christmas," he called. "Where®s
Al?" But Al was there by then-all eyes for the two beautiful
horses,
"Al, I wanted you to see a blue
ribbon colt, Isn't he a beauty?”
Mr. Summy's handsome face
glowed--that is the only way of
describing his looks that day. Al
was smiling. He was flattered,
I knew, that Mr, Summy would
think of him and show him the

"What do youcall him, Mr,
Summy?"
"Well, you name him, boy-he’s yours, " and George Summy
passed over the halter rope to
hundreds of dollars as casually as
most people would give one a cur
pup.
Al couldn't speak as Mr, Summy
added, "No one would have taken
care of my horses as you did,
Thank you, Al, and the best of
Christmas, ™
