Highway Litter Picked Up
By Local Lions And Boy Scouts
Nevada City Lions Club mem-~
bers and Boy Scouts from the
city found out last week what
highway litter really means,
The Lions, in what they hope
will become a semi-annual event,
combed the roadsides leading to
and from Nevada City Dec, 11
and carted away six overflowing
pickup truck loads of junk.
"It*s surprising how filthy the
roadsides are,” John Knutson,
chairman of the event said this
week,
"If people would only take a
second to keep their junk in the
car and dump it at home, if one
person wouldhelp, it would make
the city more beautiful. "
The Lions and Scouts covered
Highway 20 from the city to Five
Mile House; Ridge Road to the
high school; Banner Mountain
Road; Highway 20-49 from Bruns~wick Road through the city; ,
Highway 49 to Indian Flat and the
Bloomfield Road from the Hoge
Mine to 49,
Knutson said people passing the
cleanup crews stopped to express
amazement at the amount of
litter the group had amassed,
On Bloomfield Road, the large
open end mailbox has become a
target of passing beer drinkers
whotry tothrow their empty cans
into the box like trying to catch
the ring on the merry-go-round,
Few are successful apparently,
Knutson said he picked up 40 beer
cans from around the mail box
and the woman who owns the
property said she had removed
at least that many just afew days
earlier.
