Child cancers
often hard
to recognize
Children's cancers are often
hard to recognize since, like
cancer in adults, they may masquerade as trivial disorders.
A healthy awareness of possibility of cancer and a knowledge
of the signs and symptoms of
the common childhood tumors
may serve to save a child's
life. The warning signaJs mentioned here may not mean cancer, but they should be brought
to the attention .of:a doctor.
Cancer of the. nervous system is a cancer which arises
in certain nerve fibers of the
body, and may occur anywhere,
usually swelling in the abdomen,
Brain tumors symptoms: dizziness, difficulty in walking, unexplained nausea.
Cancer of the kidney symptom
is swelling or lump inthe child's
abdomen,
Leukemia is cancer of the
blood-forming tissues. Early
detection is difficult because
the onset often resembles the
symptoms of ordinary ailments,

The Women's Auxilliary of the Ophir Hill Fire Dept. held
its annual Christmas party at the Dragon Seed Restaurant
in Cedar Ridge. This year it was also a farewell party for
two members who are moving away from the area: Zoe Stuart and Edrey Summers, ;
President Marguerite Subbotin has been snowed in all week
in her hill top home, which is above Firehouse #1, Marguerite reports the objective of the group is to raise funds to buy
safety-protective gear for the men on the force, The last
items purchased were steel-toed boots and air-pacs. Before the Auxilliary was organized, the men had to provide
their own protective gear. The ladies meet at 8, the first
Thursday of each month at the Ophir Hill Fire Dept. Fire
House #1 at Union Hill,
Brenda Dayton said they all "had a ball" at the party and
announced that soon their newest member, Betty Mecartea
will open a Ceramic shop in Cedar Ridge, in the Y, where
Brunswick Road comes into Colfax Highway. _

The Ophir Hills Volunteer Fire Dept. held its regular meeting at the #1 Fire House Tuesday evening. Jerry Dayton
said it was a "training meeting" to keep everybody in tiptop shape.

M. E. Spansel Jr. and his family, from Los Angeles, will
be spending Christmas with his parents, Malvern Spansel
Sr., on Day Road. There will be stockings for the two grandchildren waiting for Santa to fill Christmas eve. The Malvern's other two sons were home for Thanksgiving. :

The Ray Seghezzys will be with their family and Pat's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Shepherd of Pine Cone Circle.
Pat's sister, Sue Allen, and her six children will also be

The cozy little wood stove in Don's Cedar Ridge Store is
most welcome these cold wintery days. Don and Karen Sintek had their first anniversary November 1, 1971. It is just
one year since they came to Cedar Ridge. Originally from
Rawlins, Wyoming, they lived in Santa Clara, Calif., for nine
years, where Don was an electrical engineer with Fairchild,

Excited youngsters poured from the Union Hill School at
noon last Friday, as school let out for Christmas vacation.
A few snow balls whizzed through the air as the youngest
youngsters carried their goodies home from class parties,
The eighth graders in Berle Shelton's class were treated
to the showing of an original play, entitled "Christmas Play"
written by Mark Nygard and Danny Del Gado; Danny is also
president of the class and was ‘director’ of the play. A fireplace had been constructed as a backdrop for the performance.
Santa Claus, played by Mike Newfelt, had his problems. First
he lost his stomach; then to his chagrin, and the amusement
of the audience, he lost his pants!. St. Nick visited all the
classrooms after the play and distributed apples and chocolate covered Santas.
In Mrs. Webster's kindergarten class, the children were
a bit wary of Santa Claus at first. But, he soon won them
over and they sat on his lap and told him what they wanted
for Christmas. Mrs. Marge Niver helped with the party and
gift exchange.
First and second graders in Mrs, Heafey's room enjoyed
songs, Santa and goodies provided by the mothers, In attendance were Virginia Gilbert, room mother; Irna Mildred,
Betty Hess, Carole Morgan, Jan Woods and Mildred Shanks.
German, Swedish, Russian and Rumanian.dances were enjoyed by the sixth and seventh graders in Mr.,Pauley's class.
The highlight of their international Christmas party was the

Several mothers sent punch and cookies. Mrs. Jensen
-and Helen Bigelow were on hand to help. There were games
and prizes and a gift exchange.
In Jack Murphy's room, the party was a rousing success,
Mothers donated the refreshments and Jack said the youngsters served and cleaned up by themselves,
Mrs. Brattin will spend the) vacation days with her two
year old, Lisa and also plans to entertain, ride her horses,
and "do lots of skiing.”

George and Peaches Brown are looking forward to a quiet
Christmas in Cedar Ridge "at home." They escaped the city
hub-bub and mad rush when they moved to Cedar Ridge three
years ago, after living in San Carlos for 21 years,

Mr. and Mrs. Leigh Busse and their five children will be
guests of Roberta and John Cox at their new cabin on Lake
Serene. This will be a very special holiday as it is a family
reunion for the Homer Knight family. .

Some of the 53 airplanes’ based at the Nevada County Air
Park have been snowed in, but the 4,200 foot runway has been
kept clear of snow. Rick Brown, flight instructor, said a
new ground school will start Jan. 1, with a class for private
rate Monday and Wednesday; and one for instrument rate on

Woody Woodbury flew his Twin Comanche to San Jose on
Saturday to pick up his daughter, Judy, who came home for
the holidays from Kansas City.
There was a lot of excitement out there on Friday when
a brand new De Havilland jet radioed in to request landing
instructions. The president of the Humble Oil Company was
coming in from Oklahoma City to pick up his daughter who
attends John Wolham School.
Sunday morning, retired Capt. A. C. Lundberg, formerly
with Trans-World Airlines, stopped by the pilot's lounge to
rap, see the planes and have a cup of coffee with the boys,
Bill Johnson had an early Christmas with friends, when
he drove to San Diego the weekend of Dec. 12. Bill is a former Army chopper pilot. ;
Robin Bullock, secretary, and her husband Randy BuNock,
airport manager, celebrated their sixth wedding anniversary
Dec. 18. The Bullocks, daughter Jennifer, 5, son Hardy, 1,
and Robin's brother Rick, will fly to Mineral, Calif. to spend
Christmas with Robin and Rick's mother, Mrs. Betty Brown.’
Early Sunday morning somebody took a liking to Fred Knoop's
Navajo. There were scratches and marks on the door where
someone had tried to jimmy it open. Fred is the owner of the

tells us that services will be held as usual on Sunday, 11

Jack Murphy, fifth and sixth grade teacher at Union Hill
and his wife Lynda are off to Eureka for the vacation with
their two offspring; Tahni Michelle, 2, and Douglas Michol,
1, They will be guests of Lynda's parents Clifford and Irene
Dunn,

George Footman, 72, of Edgewood Drive. lost control of his
1970 Maverick, when he hit a slick place, Thursday morning
Dec. 16, and plowed into a tree head-on. Slim Jenkins rushed
him to Alta Sierra Hospital. He had a severe gash on his
head, injured his hand and legs and has two black eyes. The
car was badly damaged. Mr. and Mrs, Footman moved here
from Millbrae, Calif, seven years ago when he retired.

Mr. and Mrs, Leonard J. Lutz will be celebrating the holidays
with their three children and six grandchildren, including
"a brand new one" Mandy.
Jim Feightner was out at the Air Park Sunday morning
surveying the snow scene. He and wife Ethel look forward to
seeing their daughter Pat and her husband Jim Maring, and
grandson 8 mos, old Jeff.
The Cedar Ridge Beauty Shop is looking very festive these
days. Says Gerry Dayton, "I made Dorothy put the tinsel on
the tree, and she hasn't come om of it yet."

Dorothy Anderson will be traveling to Yerington, Nevada,
with her family to spend a few days with her parents, Mr.
and Mrs. Joe Womak.
December 10th, Alice and Hobart Smith celebrated their
seventh anniversary of the Cedar Ridge Ladies Shop. Lois
Callahan, who has been with Alice since March, helped serve
coffee and fruitcake to those who dropped in. Hobart has been
kept dashing, delivering the lovely gold boxes with their green,
red and gold ribbons to snow covered Cedar Ridge.
