A $74,000 Economic Development Administration grant has
been approved for the county
to help finance a sanitary landfill at the McCourtney Road’
dump and to establish satellite
collection stations at selected
points, ’
Congressman Harold "Bizz"
Johnson made the announcement
to local officials and The Union.
The approved grant represents 50 per cent of the original estimated cost of $148,000
to complete the project. However, because EDA requirements mandated some changes
the cost went up to $165,000,
according to Harry Hider, director of public works and a
member of the Solid Waste Disposal Committee. Hider said
additional federal money may
be forthcoming to meet 50 per

Supervisor Bob Long, county auditor John Trauner and
Hider, members of the committee, will discuss procedure
and implementation of the grant
with EDA officials Wednesday
in Seattle, Wash.
The board of supervisors has
budgeted about $30,000 for the
project for this fiscal year, Hider said. The DPW director
anticipates the county will receive federal money on a work
progress basis.
Approval culminated a series
of efforts of many people. The
proposal went through the Grass

which reviewed and okayed the
original grant, Hider said. Lou
Meikle, consultant for the solid
waste project, helped .prepare
final plans and specifications,
Physical work on the project
probably will begin as soon as
weather permits,
