Dunbar 273-2934 Burning the midnight oil and Christmas seems to be synonymous, At four in the morning this fact doesn't help this weary old body at all. The only way I could find the living room this morning was by the smell of pine. My body was moving but the mind wasn't working and I firmly believe my eyes were closed. A couple of cups of coffee and a trip out into the breezeway after wood for the fires finally got me going. This hustle and bustle is not a product of our modern world. I remember waking many a time when I was a kid to find my mother burning midnight oil literally, as well as figuratively, Rural electrification had not been heard of then. Even cities had gas lights. We used coal oil lamps and lanterns in those days, We usually had a white Christmas at home and it feels like we might have one here this year. This thrills me to pieces even though I know it does make life more difficult. ; R&R . ’ Last night our little community got into the Christmas spirit with its annual community party. In spite of the dreadful weather the hall was almost full. Eugene Trautwein brought his choral group from Ready Springs School to sing carols for us, Their favorite numbers required more than the 14 voices that turned out but the carols they did sing were delightful. Evidently no one expected us to get started on time. Before the children had finished there were seven more present, I would: like to have them do it again but was afraid to ask. The 14 who sang were Brenda Beaty, Brenda Biladeau, Terry Biladeau, Ann Cranmer, Brad Foster, Lorene Lewis, Brian McVey, Mike Moore, Stacey Purvis, Cher Saldeteries, Denise Stevens, and Mark Warnke. The choral presentation was followed by a skit by some of our 4-Hers, It was called "Guess What I'm Making" which turned out tobe "a cake for our Lord Jesus' birthday". The skit was cast and directed by Miss Brenda Prochaska, Her cast included Kathryn Baer, Mike Moore, Denise and Diane Stevens and Sue Thomas, Our final effort was a Tableau, The First Christmas, with Mrs, Allan (Mamie) Slade providing the story and song. Mrs, Frank (Violet) Kavka was the accompaniest for "Away in the Manger" and "O Holy Night". Our lovely Mary was Miss Linda Prochaska, The light shining up from the Cradle into her sweet face was a beautiful sight. The Three Wise Men were Mike Moore as Caspar, Richard Dickson as Balthazar, and Charles Baer as Melchior. They were as fresh and delightful as the wonderful old story. Wm. Bursill acted as Santa Claus and appeared as the group sang Jingle Bells. He provided the youngsters with candy canes, They finished their evening with punch, cookies -and hot coffee to prepare them for the snow that was falling outside. The event was sponsored by the Rough and Ready Chamber of Commerce and Donald Long, president and Mrs, Hugh (Fay) Dunbar, were chairmen for the party. There was a table of toys provided for sale by our Fire Dept. and presided over by Mrs, Marion (Noreen) Harwood, The hostesses (workerew) were Mmes. Connie Baer, Myrtle Hester, Mary O'Neal, and Leona Wright. The ladies of the Grange plus a few civic minded citizens provided the homemade cookies and there wereenough left for a good start on the next mailing for Operation Cookie. Mrs. Mary Moneta is the Grange chairman for Operation Cookie, and this will make her very happy with us. Among the guests who attended our party were Bill Merrick son of Mrs. Sue Fay and two of his friends, Cynthia and Jeff Fitting. “a es R&R ) The Grange meeting on Friday night had almost as inclement weather as did the community party. The Newcomers Lyric Ensemble who were to provide their program were also handicapped with a lack of singers. Only eight of the group of 26 were present. The ladies who sang were Mmes,. Charlotte Anderson, Helen Beatie, Jean Burke, Fay Dunbar, Esther Keeter, Beulah Schearer, Olyve Simmons, and Elaine Vogt. John Kartozian of Rough and Ready substituted for the group accompanist Mrs, Meda Snow who was snowbound, The shortcomings of the Grange piano were so apparent that later in the evening the membership voted to buy a new one and committee of Mmes. Marguerite Abbott, Donnis Davis, Myrtle Hester, and Elsie Rose were appointed to implement the action. Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth (Leona) Wright of Rex Reservoir Road, Rough and Ready, were obligated to membership. Orchids again to the Grange for providing, not only a hall for community activities, but also a beautifully decorated and lighted Christmas tree throughout the month of December. R&R ; The. Penn Valley Fire Dept. held their annualdinner at the’ Lake Wildwood Clubhouse this year, There were about 80 guests to enjoy a ham or prime rib dinner, Mrs. Isabel Haas gave one of her famous readings. Highlight of the evening was the presentation by the auxiliary of their annual check to the fire dept. Those ladies work very hard. With their food booth at the fair, their bazaar, rummage sales, and their food booth at the rodeo they were able to present a check well over the $2,000 dollar figure for earnighs this year. j R&R : The Floyd ‘Hyatts of Spenceville Road are ‘planning an interesting event for early Christmas week before their guests arrive for the holiday feast. They are going to see the Van Gough Exhibit at the d’Young Museum in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco. This. very famous collection will soon go into its permanent home and will not be seen again outside the memorial built to house it in Amsterdam, Holland. R&R Jerry Baerman of Connecticut who is visiting in Rough and Ready is a house guest of Bert Spaits, Last weekend the Spaits had another illustrious guest. Grandson Ricky Boling of Oakland who is a Science Major at Loyola University, Due to the death of Mrs. Gale (Agnes) Spaite of El Cerrito the Spaits have cancelled their Christmas visit to relatives in the east and postponed temporarily their mid winter vacation to goes: eM . &R . The-ladies of the Grange held their Christmas party last Tuesday at the home of Mrs, Morton (Elsie) Rose, Twenty one ladies enjoyed potluck salads, dessert and the roast turkey which Mrs, Rose prepared, No entertainment was provided other than Christmas stories and caroling. The exchange .of gifts from the lovely green tree trimmed entirely in huge white satin bows and tiny twinkling lights was the highlight of the party. The wind churning about in the pines as it hurried to bring in Thursdays storm and the view of snow around the Tahoe area was enough to make the warm firesidé and the conversation of friends sufficient entertainment. * Siegfried, Joan Sirago. . blood, Christine Waddell, PamWilliams, Rita Wills, Gregory Marlene Smith, Steven Smith, ela Wasley, Lila Weaver, Dave Wolters, Mary Wright, Marilyn Brad Sumrell, Michael Tigard, Webster, Leatha Welker, Terri Wymer, Marjorie Wymer, Sally Shelly Trouchon, Teresa TrueWheatley, Kathy Williams, Mary Yock. { goog
