One of the great lakes of the
west is located just 33 miles .
north of Reno, in the Nevada
desert. It is the largest natural
body of water in the state mea—suring 32 miles: in length and
12 miles in width, The lake
was named by Captain John C,
Fremont who, seeing it for the
first time in 1844, noticed a
e large rock rising from the water

huge white pelicans,
‘Scattered around the lake are
numerous tufa rock formations,
interesting geological formations that add unusual dimension
to the otherwise flat shores of
the lake, : :
The road from Reno (Nevada
State Highway 33) is a good,
asphalt surface that whisks you
that reminded him of the great there in about a half hour, says
pyramids of Egypt.
This deep blue inland sea is
remnant of -Lake ~Lhontan, a
great body of water that once
occupied much of the Great Basin region. The lake probably has
not changed much since Fremont saw it over a hundred
years ago. it is still one of the
most beautiful natural wonders
of the west and is the home of
the Paiute Indians who live
within the boundaries of the
Pyramid Lake Indian Reservation. :
The lake is popular for cutthroat trout fishing and is stocked with this variety of fish.
Other varieties include the Sacramento perch and the cui-ui,
the latter is a sucker that is
found ‘only in Pyramid. .
Near the south end of the lake
is a large flat island named
Anaho -Island. Rh is-a federal
bird sanctuary and a breeding
the California State Automobile
Association. You can drive up
the western side of the lake
about 12 miles north of Sutcliffe
where the road swings further
west away from the water. Going
south the highway takes you to
Nixon, a small town’ which is
headquarters for the Indian
families living on the reservation. Ae
Pyramid Lake was called by
Fremont, "..... .a@ gem in
the mountains," Part of its fascination comes from the fact
that its deep blue surface is.
such a contrast to the surrounding sand and sagebrush and treeless peaks of the Nevada desert, Whether you are a fisherman who wants to try your luck
for the cutthroats, 2 rock-hound
looking for new hills to explore,
or just a sightseer out for an
afternoon's drive---Pyramid,
Lake is well worth the trip.

Joe Krumholz has been elected president of the Nevada Union
High School Boosters ‘Club for
the 197] year.
Krumholz has been active with
the Boosters Club for .the past
year: The Grass Valley businessman hopes to increase the
small membership of the club.
Vice president-elect is John
Gilman. Tom Crosswhite has
been re-elected treasurer. The
new treasurer is Anita Hodkins.

Heisey and Robert Vessey.
Functions of the Boosters Club
are to support all activities at
the high school.
Raphael (Ray) J. Polk will
receive his 50-year pinas a Mason Wednesday, Dec. 9, at a
ceremony held at the Nevada
City Masonic Hall.
Ed Farley will present the pin
as Haven Martin, worshipful
' master of=the lodge, conducts
the business meeting.
Polk became a master Mason
in 1920, when he was 30, and was
a member of Excelsior Lodge of
San Francisco, He went through
the degrees of the Scottish Rite
in Oakland and became a 32 degree Scottish Rite Mason in 1925.
He was master of. the Lodge of
Perfection, wise master of
Knights of Kadosh and advisor
to the DeMolay of Oakland, He
was elected a knight commander
of the court of honor of the Oakland bodies in 1935.
He was elected to the 33rd
degree of the Southern Jurisdiction of the United States of America and inspector general honorary, privileged to wear the 33rd
degree ring and white cap,
He. became a member of the
Ancient Arabic Order Nobles of
the Mystic Shrine in 1926 and 10
years later became potentate of
Aahmes Temple in Oakland.
Polk is a native of Grass Valley, and he and his wife, Rofena,
returned to the Golden Empire
to make their home, having spent
54 years outside the county.
The Polks established their
permanent home at 504 Nursery
I7th wedding anniversary.
Polk became affiliated with
larged his Masonic brotherhood
with membership in the Golden
Hills Scottish Rite Association
and the Gold Unit pf the Ben
Ali Shrine. :
