The stamp will feature a head
and shoulders view of a Scout
with right hand upraised in the
three-finger Scout sign.
This stamp, designed by the.
noted artist, Norman Rockwell,.
will be horizontally,
measuring 0,84 by 1.44 inches, and . .
will be printed on the Giori press
in khaki and blue. An initial
order for 120 million of these
stamps, to be released in panes
of fifty, has been authorized.
The likeness of a Scout will be
printed in gradations of khaki,
while the lettering “1910-1060” at
the left, “Boy Scouts of America”
across the top, “U. S.
at the right, and the large “4c”
in the field to the right, will be
in blue. i
When Postmaster General
Summerfield authorized the
stamp:it was the unanimous opinion of the Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee that Norman
Rockwell, who had painted the
official Bay Scout calendars,
would be the logical artist to prepare the design.
The Post Office Department
said that the collectors desiring’

GARDENERS LIKE A GIFT
TO GARDEN WITH
Is there a. gardener in the
house? If there is, give him a
gift to garden with this Christmas, and we guarantee, you'll
make him the happiest on on
‘ something every . gardener ¢an DF
put to use but often, puts off buying in favor. of more f
needs. The only thing we know
that’s nicer than a planter is a}’
pair of them—of one that has his
favorite plant growing in it.
The California Association of
Nurserymen suggests that a good.
garden. sprayer is both timely
and of long term ‘value to the
gardener. C.A.N. members can i
show you many types that will
make ‘dormant-season spraying
as easy as pie.e _
Lawns are mostly idle during
winter months, but an efficient
new lawn mower will be appreciated by anyone who has a carpet of green to keep in shape. If
circumstances warrant such a
gift, the power mower, of course,
is the too] supreme in this field.
A pair of good pruning shears
is a must for efficient garden operation. Time and energy can be
wasted pruning with inadequate
equipment, to say nothing of the
plants that can be ruined if cutting tool isn’t sharp and efficient.
‘With winter pruning deadline to
be met, this can be a most welcome gift.
Practically every gardener alive
look the possibiltiy. And .as for
sprinkling devices to go on the
hose, O.A.N. nurserymen offer a
wide and varied line of them—
from fine-spray fogging nozzles
to lawn sprinklers that will water
on a square.
There aré countless other gifts
to be found at nurseries, but space
limits naming them: all. Don’t
overlook the possibility of a
garden book, or gift certificate.
Nurserymen offer: an assortment f
of them to cover everything a
gardener should know,

169,000.
This was reported last week by
John F. Henning, Celifornia director of industrial relations, who
said that non-farm employment
this year is up by 4 per cent from

industries, which bore the brunt
of fecession cutbacks last year,
made a rapid recovery in 1959
until the onset of the steel strike
in mid-July.
Some industries oustripped
their pre-recession employment
records. Sharpest rise has been
in missils, where the workfroce
is up by two-fifths this year—
and in electronics, where it is up
by one-fith.
The auto industry also made a
good comeback this year, although steel shortages caused employment cutbacks by November.
One exception to the generally
favorable employment picture is
the huge aircraft industry, which
made only a slight recovery from
the slump which started in the
latter part of 1957. On the basis
of figures now available, this industry’s employment will aver‘age about. 243,000, up by 3,000

an overall ‘increase of 4-per cent

On the other hand, the number
of workers in transportation,

the same as in 1958, and slightly
fewer are employed in mineral
