ia 3 s a iy 8 Oo 3 > o es 3 x 3 = o 3 A SMALL TOWN SMALL WO RLD SSS SE FS SS SS SES the nonalignedbloc, whichhascloseto a majority in the United Nations, And his driving ambition puts him more often than not in partnership with Moscow, For American policy-makers Nasser over the last decade has been a baffling, frustrating opponent who cannot be pinned with one tag or another, With the burning of the United States Information Service Library and its 26,000 volumes by so-called African students -a plot obviously planned with full knowledge of the techniques of arson-the hand may have been, overplayed. Ever since the fire and a subsequent stern protest by Ambassador Lucius Battle, the Cairo press has been conspicuously free of the violent anti-Americanism that reached a peak just before the book-burning. The fire-blackened rooms of the library -perhaps the best on the side of technical and scientific publications in the Middle East -are melancholy evidence of the violent passions that can be exploited in Asia and Africa. The controlled press published not one line about the atrocities committed by the rebels in the Congo, The propaganda attack culminating in the book-burning was aimed at tne Belyians and Americans as "imperialists" who "invaded the Congo” in a “military conspiracy” to restore colonialism. Since 1952 Egypt has had $1,200,000,000 in American aid, most of itin surplus food, which comes in today at the rate of $140,000,000 a year. This help frees scarce foreign exchange for industrialization and the military buildup. The government has requested an increase next year, with supplementary meats, to relieve acute food shortages. If this help were withdrawn by Congress as a consequence of the outrage against the library, it would be a blow but, in the view of long-time observers, not an irreparable blow. Nasser has the power to take damaging reprisals. He could deny American oil tankers carrying the wealth of the Arab oil fields the use of the Suez Canal. Oilisthe be all and end all of the American presence in the Arab world, Aramco's investment of more than a billion dollars in Saudi Arabia is said to be the largest overseas stake. With no oil as yet discovered in Egypt, Nasser nevertheless has demonstrated his shrewdness by promoting the line that Arab oil, wherever it it found, belongs to all the 90,000,000 Arabs. The fabulously rich little state of Kuwait, with an annualrevenue of at least $600,000,000, has been “persuODD BODKINS .-. IT'S TOUGH oN LIVING IN A y5 TRACT DEVELOPMENT. aded" to give Egypt a loan, spread over several years, of $100,000,000. This could be a precedent for other wealthy sheikdoms. Recently two American companies, Phillips Petroleum and Pan-American, a subsidiary of Standard of Indiana, have signed an exploitation contract with the Egyptian government calling for expenditure of $75,000,000 over 10 years and a 50-50 sharing of any discoveries. Cairo is the Arab cultural and religious center, and this underscores Nasser’s claim to be leader of the Arab world. He hashadhistroubles, notably in Yemen, where 40,000 Egyptian troops, sustained at a cost of not less than $50,000,000 to $60,000,000 a year, have not achieved the “republic” of Yemen that is Nasser's goal. Proposed talks with Saudi Arabia, which backs a royal Yemen, have broken down, By withdrawing from the United Arab Republic, Syria dealt a blow to Nasser’s ambition. The propaganda radio screams invective at Israel. Lately a savage attack has been aimed at the cardinals who voted in the Vatican Ecumenical Council to absolve the Jews of the blame for Christ's crucifixion. But although this is a community of unfailing hatred it is hardly a bond of common policy. The nonaligned conference last October took a strong stand for peaceful coexistence and general disarmament and against “neo-colonialism” and all foreign bases, Neo-colonialism means any economic interest of the Western powers in any former colony, This was echoed " loudly in the speech that Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko gave at the U.N. General Assembly recently. By coincidence or design, the wave length appears to be the same; and this for the West is one of the great imponderables in reckoning the role of a figure who claims a place in the center of the world stage, if only by reason of his own skillful strategy. ---Marquis Childs LETTERS TO THE EDITOR AN CHECK. OF FACTS. SUGGESTED Hi dear Bob Paine, Fool's Gold Columnist! My goodness, you sure did get yourself "pied" up on last week's picture Dear Elza Kilroy he gets a vote of thanks from me for setting you on the rite trail for sure, I knew something was wrong with the whole bitand I was in a tizzy trying to piece the thing together. "Get your facts straight" if you wantto be a journeyman printer orhave you graduated next thing you know, the editor will be putting you to cover the society column, wouldn't you love that! Dear teachers I knew, brought back memories. No one was so pretty and shall we say, straight laced, as “Lizzie” Keenan but such a standard as she set for us a lady in all things come snow or rain or what ever weather Nevada City offered she came up the "Champeen” Road from her home, with measured tread and straight back, (which she never lost in the class room). Thank the dear teachers of yesterdays for trying to instill in us, not only knowledge but a vestige of gentility for what it was worth, even then, and a much less practiced thing today and, for sure, I can ‘t see that the world has improved in manners I still think a “thank you” means something so thank you and have a Happy Holiday. Affectionately Honorrene R, Olinghouse nee Bond San Mateo YOU SHOULD SEE MINE. 400 CMSTLES , ALL AHE SAME, BUILT ON 100 ACRES OF RAISED BUT WHAT'S REALLY BAD IS WHEN THE KNIGHTS COME HOME FROM A HARD DAN'S JOUSTING . NEW SIGNS OF THE TIMES To the Editor: Recently Nevada City had a pleasant surprise, the reopening of the Bank Club Restaurant refurbished in very good taste, and serving very goéd meals. It seemed as if Nevada City was becoming aware of the importance of good taste. Apparently this achievement was a fluke, for now outside the same building which is already plastered with unattractive signs there is to be an enormous revolving affair. It sounds horrendous, Is Nevada City to be allowed to become a Honky. 1-Tonk town? I protest. Sincerely Helen Bontecou Nevada City OLD TEACHERS REMEMBERED To the Editor: Here is a few more of my memories. IseeBob Paine has written about some of his teachers. I knew some of them but Mrs, Gertrude Goyne I knew the best as I was ‘in her grade two years. I did not try to get ahead, The reason was there were three of us that went together all over. They were Frank and Pike Solari. I wonder if Mr. Paine remembers Frank Taylor's Grocery. He always got his coffee green and when he would roast it you would smell it a long way off. I wish I had some now. I forgot to tell you about my first teacher, Her name was Miss Adair. My second was Mrs, Hathaway, and of course my last was Mrs, Gertrude Goyne. I don't want to forget my principal believe me was tough, ItwasJ.J.O ‘Niel. He had two sons I used to know one of them well, His name was Cliff. He was a regular kid. I don't know if Dan O'Neill is any kin. If he is 1 guess he is all right. Some thing else you can sink your teeth in, Do you know that they used to make cigars in Nevada City? i I see somebody wrote to you about roasting them, If they have it coming to them give them both barrels, I am all for it. Folks who look for praise all the time don't amount to much, You have to step on their tail feathers once in a while to let them know you're not asleep, Well Christmas is coming. I remember when I was a kid up there. If 1 got a bag of hard candy and an orange I was happy and lucky too, I want to wish all my old friends up there and your staff a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and I want to thank you all for printing my letters that I write to you, You're a swell group. I hope to meet you all after the holidays. 1 could write a book about that old town, . The best to all of you in the New Year. : Jack Bassett Oakland ~ THE CLANGING OF ALLE THOSE SILLY DRAWBRIDGES BEING LOWERED IS ENOUGH TO PRE You CRAZNI!/
