At a recent meeting at the
Nevada City Artists’ Gallery,
plans were formulated to organize a Friends of the Libraries group
in the Nevada City-Grass Valley
area, The purpose of the organization will be to offer community
assistance and support in all possible ways to the two city libraries,
Members of the organizing
committee are Helen Bontecou,
Margaret McPherson, Lucille
Sheffel, Ruth Heller, and Janet
Micoleau,. Chairman of the
group, Mrs, E.O. Schugren, announced that the first projects of
the Friends of the Libraries will be
to stimulate children's interest in
and enjoyment of books, and to
provide necessary reference
materials in both libraries,
Further plans include providing
attractive bulletin boards with
book news, offering volunteer
help for the libraries when
needed, andcollecting books and
magazine subscriptions for the
libraries.
The American Association of
University Women, underthe
leadership of Mrs. Lynn Bramkamp, is helping to organize a
summer reading program at the
libraries for the children of the
community.
Active Friends of the Library
groups are working in San Francisco and Berkeley, among other
cities, and the organizing committee hopes to make the Nevada
City -Grass Valley group ashelpful .

Membership in Friends of the
Libraries will be $1 for individuals
and $5 for organizations, Contributions may be mailed to the

Mrs, Neita Dempsey of Nevada
City has been elected president of
the Gold Quartz Democratic Club
for the coming year.
Other officers elected at a recent meeting in the Alta-OaksSunset fire house are Mel Fryland,
vice president; Evelyn Fuller,
secretary and Marian Sinclair,
treasurer.
The next meeting of the club
willbe onJan, 21. The meetings
are open to all interested Democrats.
Petition Circulated
Proponents of incorporation of
the Truckee and Donner area are
stepping up their efforts to securesignatures on a petition asking
the county to call an election.
January 10 has been set as a
deadline that will permit submission of the petition to the
county supervisors in time to assure an election in September.
Proponents of the incorporation
plan are stressing the necessity of
local government for the growing
community. A selling point is the
growing amount of state and federal tax monies which are retumed to cities and other financial
assistance which is available to
organized cities,

Club Members
Attend Luncheon
Seventeen members of the Sacramento Pioneer Doll Club enjoyed a no-hostess Christmas luncheon at Danne's, on Freeport
Boulevard in Sacramento Dec. 3.
A large, table was decorated
with pine cone trees and a large
centerpiece tree trimmed with
tiny Santas and angels, After the
lunch the center tree was given
as a door prize to Mrs. Georgia
Dupsyk of Sacramento.
Following the lunch the group
went to the home of Mrs. Vedah
Affleck for gift exchanging. Mrs,
Affleck had many miniature settings for the members to enjoy.
Assisting Mrs. Affleck was Mrs,
Mary Ready.
Mrs, Lenore Coughlin of Nevada City acted as Santa Claus and
distributed many beautiful and
clever doll presents to each member.

Baggett To Attend Band Clinic
The first important Fine Arts
division event of the new year at
Chico State College will be the
13th Annual Northern California
Music Reading Clinic Saturday,
January 9, in the Music Bldg,
Sponsors are the college and
the Keynote Music Service, Los
Angeles, which furnishes all the
music to be read, The purpose of
the clinic is to provide music
teachers in the nine-county service area of the college with the
* opportunity to hear the latest publications of band and choral
music. :
The teachers will be welcomed
>
at a luncheon by Dr. Donald R.
Gerth, dean of'students, and Dr.
Joseph M, Wilson, chairman of
the division of fine arts. The college string ensemble under the
direction of Dr, Simon Carfagno,
assistant professor of music, will
then present a short program.
The honor band for the clinic
willbe that from Yuba City High
School, directed by Barrie Wells.
Also participating are Donald
Baggett, Nevada Union High,
Grass Valley; Robert Shotwell,
Chico High; and Frank Wilkinson, Yuba College, Marysville.
Taking part in the activities of

the day will be the Chico State
College Band, Glees and Mixed
Chorus, and A Cappella Choir.
Section chairmen, from the college music faculty, will be John
P, Browne, Jr., elementary and
junior high band; Donald M, Har
disty, secondary school band;
Luella Lofgren, elementary and
junior high choral; and Ralph W.
Wadsworth, s¢condary school
choral.
