Care needed in
winter weather
Bad weather, added at a time
of holiday rush and excitement,
magnifies the ordinary pedestrian traffic dangers to enormous
proportions. The California
State Automobile Association
urges all pedestrians and
drivers to put special emphasis
on being alert in traffic at this
time of year.
Bt is always tempting for pedestrians to disregard safety
when it is raining, sleeting or
snowing as they ‘hurry to complete their business and get
to the comfort of their homes.
However, this is the worst pos‘sible time to be careless, Deiereased visibility and reduced
bewehicle control due to bad weath> er are critical problems to driv‘ers, while pedestrians are
coping with slippery streets and
Sidewalks. Make sure your
children observe all safety measures during the bad weather
season---set the example for
them by your own careful actions.
The CSAA also cautioned parents to check their children's
clothing, making sure that rain.coats and snow jackets are
brightly colored, and that hats
and boots fit properly so children can see clearly. As the poster demonstrates, umbrellas
should be carried back of the
head so they never interferewith vision.
As part of AAA's nationwide
school traffic safety education
program, this poster is being
distributed to all parts of the
country.

THE STAR HAD STOPPED
The old man was wise, wiser perhaps than most.
But it had been a long journey and he was weary to
the bone. And wisdom sometimes ‘seems to lose itself
when the days are.shambling by and the road is
twisted and the dust rides lazily in the silent air. Something had happened.
The star had stopped.
For many days . . . the mind could not recall how
many . .. the old man had been following this star. He
first had seen it near the horizon in the east, and was
surprised. Had the vagaries of age made him forget the
beautiful program of the heavens? Was it indeed time
for the
But no. .. not in the east!
t star of evening to command the skies?
So being wise with the wisdom that says no man
can know all reasons why, he watched, and followed.
It seemed the only thing to do. . . really the only thing
left to do in the days that still were his.
And now the star had stopped.
It hung fairly high over the distant hills, bright and
clean. And somehow its rays carried warmth ...a
strange thing for a star. A strange and-welcome thing,
for there had been little warmth—at least of heart—
in the long years behind. There always had been faith
... a faith in something he knew not quite what. There
had been courage . . . and the wisdom born of faith and
courage. And-now tonight there was a blessed warmth,
Grateful, the old man rested on the grassy hillside.
Near his head a small white flower bloomed, a sweet
small reflection of the star. And as he slowly drifted
into sleep .. . the long, long sleep . . . the old man
smiled. The star, the flower, had brought him peace; a
peace on earth he had never known before.
Across the hills .. . far miles away beneath the star
...a baby cried.

The Nevada County Nugget
Board still unagreed
The planning commission told
the supervisors Tuesday why it .
recommended residential zoning
for apiece of property in Glenbrook Heights, but the supervisors still were unable to agree
among themselves.
The board split 2-2 on a motion to approve R-1 zoning for
the Walter Woods property. Then
the item was ordered placed on
next Tuesday's agenda so Supervisor Henry Loehr, absent this
week, can make the deciding
vote. :
Voting for the residential zoning were Chairman Bret Bennallack and Supervisor William
Thomas. Against it were Supervisors Gene Ricker and Lou
Hartman,
The property in question is at
the rear of a subdivision which
the board approved for R-1 last
week, That action will not become final until an ordinance is
adopted later.
The commission's support of
residential zoning revolved
around the adjacency of the
Woods land to the homes. Bennallack's and Thomas' yes votes
basically were because of the
same reasons,
It was indicated that the votes’
against this zoning were on the
grounds that Woods property
‘also is adjacent on another side
to the Fowler lumber yard, making it a possible commercial
property.
The Woods property: was returned to the commission last
week because the original
recommendation contained no
list of reasons why the commission desired residential.
Here are the reasons the commission listed in its reply tothe
board this week: ;
The Woods property is
bordered by residential; it is
served by West Olympia Drive
which goes through the residential section and which could not
support more traffic for a commercial venture; the allegation
that taxes would be raised is
"without substance. R-1 would
not increase the appraised value"; the property is well adapted
to R-1 use; the adjacent people
want R-1; no alternate zoning is
requested by Mr. Woods; and
"nosproperty should be left unzoned."
This contention by the commission that "no property should
be left unzoned" caused one no
vote. Planning Director William
Roberts toldthe supervisors that
Commissioner Wes Moore
“doesn't agree that all of the
county should be zoned."
Another aspect of this Glenbrook area rezoning was reported to the supervisors, and
on that one there seems to be
considerable disagreement. The
supervisors deleted some property along Highway 20 from the
residential zone last week. This
Monday, the commission took
steps to start proceedings to
zone those lands multi-use reson Glenbrook zoning
The supervisors indicated
they favor commercial for that
area, not multi-use residential.
County Counsel Leo Todd, who
attended Monday's planning
meeting, said:
"Ht was the consensus, Ithink
that they (the commissioners)
did not want commercial because
in effect it is strip zoning and
not ideally situated for commercial because of a lack of
parking."
The supervisors finally
dropped the subject, indicating
the situation will be worked out
through the hearings before the
commission and the superTuesday, December 24, 1968. #7.
