Productive Valley, Foot-Hill and _ Mountain ee # vantages Net Excelied itn the State—An Enceuraging Season.. [S. F. Chronicle, Jan. 1, 1862. Nevada county claims special atiention as one of the few counties of Californiain which the three principal industries. of the State—mining, agricu!ture and horticulture—are extensively. carried on side by side. The county is accessible by rail, the Central Pacific Railroad running along itg southern boundary a considerable distance, and crossing its extreme eastern end, while the Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad intersects its central portion, extending north’ from Colfax to Nevada City and passing through Grass Valley in its route. Geographically the county lies a trifle “forth of the west to and beyond based summit of the Sierra Nevada. : In the’western portion the altitude averages some 1300 feet above the sea level, antl the surface consists of gent-. ¥ ly sloping hills and ridges with here} = and there large sized tracts of coniparatively level land. In the central section is the upper part of the borticultural belt, and here algo are most of the great quartz and gravel mines which have sincé-pioneer days been The eastern extremity is very mountainous in character, the principal inshipping and grazing. ’ About 250,000. acres of land are contained in the horticultural belt of the county, which inport. g. A great variety of productions is insured within these limits. Fruits and ing a ; long ‘and warm season; thrive particularly well on lands facing to the south where.the rays of the sun have full force; while the larger and more} slowly maturing fruits flourish on the cooler and more moist lands with a northern exposure, The valley lands between the ridges and hills have in most cases but little brush upon them, and though well furnished with. water from springs and streams are not as M well calculated for fruit growing as for . Mining and irrigation ditches, fed from natural and artificial lakes in the higher altitudes, thread all sections. This water is of the purest, and the supply never fails, -The climate has an invigoratitig freshness and salubrity that is not to be found in lower lands. There are no fogs, no blizzards, no malaria. Large numbers of people come annually from the seacoast and valleys to spend the summers here, and thus rebuild their Adjacent to Nevada City and Grass productive quartz mines as the} Provideyce, Nevada Cit 1 W ouing, Pittsburg, Neversweat laho, Empire, North Star and sentry others. The princip:1 claims are equipped with the most modern machinery for mining and milling. Washington and Eureka townships have been for the pact few years rapidly rising into prominence as quartz-mining sections, and several H.C. Ww. nia, Rocky Glen, Washington, Yuba, etc.—ure paying well. A number of others are destined to soon become dividend payers. The Delhi of Bridgeport township has within’ two years come, into prominence as ene of the best properties in the State. Other claims in that locality now being prosboned give indications of proving equally rich. Meadow Luke district, which in the sixties experienced » remarkatle boom which collapsed as suddenly as it came because of the failure of any of the processes then known to separate the gold from the 3. base metals-contained in the rock, was during the’ past summer a scene of renewed activity because of a syndicate having gone in there and partially demonstrated that the ores are redueible when properly treated, That is peculiarly the ‘snow helt” of the county, being at the summit of the Sierra Nevada.
