Virus Cause
Of ‘Decline’
New and important evidence on
the cause of pear decline, the
plant disease that has ravaged
California's pear industry, has
been revealed by University of
California scientists.
The new evidence shows that
pear decline is caused by a plant
virus that is transmitted in nature
by the pear psylla, a tiny insect.
A toxin produced by the psylla
can damagetrees, but it probably
is not the primary cause of pear
decline.
For several years, scientists

Congressman Harold T. Johnson of this district announced in
Nevada City Saturday he would
be a candidate for re-election
next November. He spoke at a
lunch meeting at the National
Hotel, .'*;
Earlier in the day, he toured
a parcel of land under disputed
title near North Columbia with
officials of the federal Bureau of
Land Management.and Fred Anderson of Nevada City, who
claims ownership. Johnson: said
he hoped the matter would be resolved to everyone's satisfaction
in the near future. .
Johnson and the BLM officials
also toured the Canada Hill property near Nevada City, which is
now under study by the BLM as a
potential local watef storage and
recreation area, He said he expected that the project would
move ahead rapidly.
Paying tribute tothe late President Kennedy as a man “all of
us loved dearly", Johnson at the
same time stressed that there had
been an orderly transition to a
new chief executive. In discussing
the work of the 1963 Congress and
tacts about pear decline that
didn't seem to fit together. Those
facts were: (1) the disease appearedto be connected somehow
with the pear psylla; (2) the
psylla'stoxinclearly atfects pear
trees (one theory held that the
toxin actually caused pear decline); but (3) pear decline behaves in some ways as if it were
caused by a virus, not a toxin.
However, the puzzle now seems
to fit together, asa result of
separate experiments conducted
on the Berkeley and Davis compuses.
