‘THAT STAR MUST HAVE BEEN
SOMETHING TO SEE’
By Hollis Bentley
December 24, 1859
"Don't swear like that. "
“Why not?" the miner called
Sandy turned to his partner in as—
tonishment.
The other shrugged,
Christmas Eve, “
Sandy grumbled and shook out
the blankets of his bunk. "You expecting Santa Claus?"
Simmons shrugged again and
absently stirred dirty dishes in a
pan of hot water.
"Seems quieter tonight,
mons said thoughtfully.
Sandy made up his bed to suit
him and sat on the bunk to pull
off his boots. “Christmas is for
little kids who have nothing. So
they can dream and still get
nothing but hurt," he said ina
voice that seemed to have just
travelled a distance through
time.
Sim mons nodded.:

off the claim this afternoon? He
was asking too many questions. "
"I couldn ‘t have done it without
hurting him and, well, it ‘s Christmas.

“That star meant peace.” Simmons said peace as though he'd
never pronounced it before.
"Sure, peace, like claim
jumpers and robbers and even
murder any day.“ Sandy pulled
the blankets around him then sat
up and pointed a finger at Simmons. “Peace like nailing that
guy to a cross?”
Simmons shrugged, “So it

Sandy looked down at his outstretched hand silently.
Simmons spoke from outside’
