What can you do when a heavy wind blowing through the vent of a recreational vehicle’s heater prevents you from lighting the pilot light? A. Station someone outside to hold a-sweater or other piece of clothing over the vent while you remain inside to light the pilot. Wind blowing through the vents of any RV ¢ appliance, not just the heater, will often blow out the pilot « lights, which means they should be checked periodically ~ in high winds. If possible, park the RV so the vents aren’t exposed to the wind. Q. Should you dilute the anti-freeze you pour into your RV’s system to winterize it, or use it straight? A. Why take a chance? Use it straight. While the nontoxic anti-freeze your RV’s water system requires runs about double the cost of thé anti-freeze you put in your car, two gallons will winterize most RVs if added properly, which means blowing out the lines with air before adding the anti-freeze. But since water can still lay in the water system’s low spots even after blowing out the lines, it’s best to add the anti-freeze without diluting. Keep in mind that an RV’s water system should be winterized only with non-toxic anti-freeze, avaialbe at RV dealers and camping ‘stores. The poisonous anti-freeze you use in your car can be used only in an RV’s drains and waste-holding tanks, never in the fresh water system. Q. Why do so many trailer manufacturers offer spare tires only as optional equipment? A. They shouldn’t, but unfortunately spares are often not part of the basic trailer package. Nevertheless, don’t ever run an RV without a spare tire. If you ever need to replace and off-size RV tire in a remote area, it could mean a forced layover of a day or more waiting for the tire to be ordered, not to mention the higher price you’ll pay. And never take an RV on the road without being sure the jacks and lug wrench will be adequate to change a tire. You’d be surprised at how many people get stuck with a lug wrench that'll fit their car’s, but not their RV’s wheel lugs. Bike safety noted Both cycling and walking at night entail greater risks and thus greater responsibilities for everyone, says the California State Automobile Association (AAA). Children are sometimes hard to spot during the daylight hours, let alone under conditions of decreased Wearing white or is one visibility. light colored clothing way to alleviate the problem of . making one’s self visible. However, wearing retro-. reflective tape lining or dangle tags is an evén better way of standing out at night. Retro-reflective tape is made of the same material used in highway signs it picks up light from a car’s headlights and reflects it back to the light source with brilliance.
