Gene Rial was installed as president of the Nevada City Chamber of Commerce, suc_ceeding Dr. Roy Stauffer.
Mike Stafford and Madge Humphries were named outstanding students of 1971 graduating
class from Seven Hills School, This was the last class to be graduated from the old school,
Fred R. Fisk of San Francisco won one of the most exciting races in the liistory of the
annual "Tour of Nevada City Bicycle Race."
JULY:
The Nevada City Council announced its intention-to apply to the Federal Government
for permission to buy the small park next to Alpha Hardwared,
Nevada City was minus its Greyhound Depot and freight service because Bill Trueblood,
agent for the line for three years, "needed the space for his own business — Trueblood Auto
:
motive."
The historic Bill Briggs home on Aristocracy Hill was badly damaged by a fire from
unknown causes.

Funds were being sought for repair of restrooms and shower facilities in the quonset hut
at Pioneer Park-Senior League Field. Nevada City’ folk had donated $64,93 to the cause to date.

SEPTEMBER: .
Groundbreaking ceremonies were held for the new Nevada City Post Office. Cost was
estimated at.$175,000, and it was to be open by Christmas.
City Manager Beryl Robinson reported to the Nevada City Council on tentative plans and
costs for a county operated dump which city residents would also use and help to pay for.

CHRISTMAS VACATION is

The 105 year old Nevada Theater was closed "indefinitely" because of suspected structural defects.
A Superior Court jury awarded Adolph Locatelli $100,000 for injuries allegedly received
in a 1967 accident during construction of the Nevada City portion of the Freeway.

APRIL:
The City of Nevada City was applying for rights to water from BLM land on Canada Hill,
to avoid paying $100,000 for a covered water storage tank.
Supervisors heard Assessor Elton A. Tobiassen's report that Nevada county would ha’
an estimated $9,481,320 increase in assessed valuation for the 1971-72 fiscal year.
Bill Barnickol, NUHS senior, won the trophy for best science exhibit created by a high
aon! student at the Central Valley Science Fair.
