“1 The Nevada County Nugget, Wednesday, December 29, 1971
By Fay M. Dunbar 273-2934
One of the resolutions that I am going to make for 1972 is to do a better job remembering
birthdays. This includes mentioning all of them that I know about. here. so that vou too can
remember them if you wish, Young Kevin Pharis will finish up 1971 with a birthday on December
31. The wife of our district supervisor, Mrs.~Maciel Filer, has one January 2 as does my own
number one husband. Mmes. LaNetta Hyatt and Leslie Justice of Spenceville Road each have
one on January 3, and Mmes, Mary Moneta and Olyve Simmons celebrate their Natal Day on
January 6, the day of the Baptism of our Savior. These last four ladies are members of Rough
and Ready Grange and so seem to me a part of our community tho' some of vou mav not know
them. My own family calendar includes five more Natal Dates in this period so you know how
busy that resolution is going to keep me.

The most wonderful birthday of all has come and gone, It always! brings so much love and
forgiveness to the hearts of all mankind that it should be celebrated all year instead of just one
day. The transposition from the old Julian Calendar to our present Gregorian Calendar changed
the day originally set aside to celebrate it from what is now December 21, the beginning of
our winter soltices, to the four day later date. I usually try to get my tree up by Dec. 21, but
I never quite manage to get the proper frame of mind until the last minute. That too shall be
one of my 1972 resolutions—start celebrating His birthday on the proper day and try for all year
as well.

. Gifts for His birthday were Gold, Frankincense, and Myrrh, Myrrh surprised me, It is a
kind of perfume. Its presentation was prophetic for in those times it was used in embalming
ointments. Frankincense, which I think of as the perfume of the Three Gifts, does burn sweetly
but it was used mainly for medicinal purposes in those days. It is a resin from the Norwegian
Fir. Myrrh is "a highly frangrant herb". Gold the most valuable of the Three Gifts is the reason
I am off on Christmas lore again. One of my readers was confused about the discovery of Gold,
I highly recommend the Gold Discovery chapter in Caugheys, History of California for details.
On January 24, 1848 James Wilson Marshall found large amounts of gold in the tailrace at Sutter's mill at what is now Coloma. On a trip to Deer Creek later that same year, Marshall found
gold here according to Thompson and West's History of Nevada County written here in 1880
about those times. He left this area however feeling that there was not sufficient quantity of the
yellow metal to make it worthwhile.

How many children did you hear last week say "there goes Santa Claus" when they saw
the jolly round man with the red. nose, white beard, and red suit. For this jolly character we can
thank illustrator. Thomas Nast, and the delightful poem "The Night Before Christmas". The
original Santa Claus was a Monk. Many European Santa Clauses were originally figures of punishment for failures. Often they were thin and usually dour, Then in 1822 that great American
Clement Moore wrote his world famous poem and in 1862 Nast did the forceful interpretation:
that made Santa Claus what’ he is today. You can see I did my homework for last week's item
about Christmas, I found it all fascinating. >

Last Thursday night Dec. 23, which started out not too bad but ended up in a downpour,
the three judges made their selections for Rough and Ready's three best Christmas lighting
effects. They had no entry blanks to work from so tried to see everything in our area from
Bitney Springs road to the foot of the Rough and Ready Ravine in Penn Valley, It took 2 1/2
hours of steady driving. We nearly got stuck in the mud back on the Don Moore home. It was
an exhilirating experience. I was not a judge just chauffeur. Judges were Mmes, Violet Hawson
and Irene Lanzendorfer and Harold Brown, We viewed 44 lighting effects. Some not so elaborate
in fact, several were just outdoor Christmas trees but they were beautiful with lights glowing
in the rain. Still to pick the three best must have been almost impossible. The judges gave special consideration to an interesting all. red arrangement at the Melvin Caffey residence on Rough
and Ready Road, Also on Rough and Ready Road they found the William Avery's beautifully lighted
up, the Sumner Browns, the William Hardin's Cathedral like windows beautiful on the hill, the
Hendersons, the Joseph Lees, the Phil Parrys, the Bert Spaites were better than ever, and near
the end of the road new neighbors the K, J. ‘foothmans had welcome lights glowing. Just om tne
road you could see the Allan Browns and further out the Everett Burkards, On Prospector Road
past the Allan Browns the Al Moniz greeted us with lights. Past the bend in the Rough and Ready
road on Miners Way there were several really nice arrangements. Near the end was one at the
home of the William Marquis family. Also off Miners Way the Ken Bartleys had a very effective
picture. On down this road, new even to me, was another delightful home but no lights. After
we got started on the road, which incidentally was quite good, we couldn't turn around and the
mud looked mighty soft so we just kept going. Mike Moore tells me it was the home of the John
Evens, Back to Hwy. 20. From Mystery Lane we viewed the effective lighting at the home of our
new neighbors, the H, H. Fountains, as well as lighting at the Beuschers, the DeVries, the Sorensons, and the Roy Wrights. On Bonanza Way the Charles Deardorfs and the William McVeys
celebrated the season with lighting. It was interesting to come on to little groups of lights such as
the ones on Hwy. 20 from Ponderosa to Randolph Lane. Here we found Mrs, Elsie Dixon and her
daughter Helga Schaefer who have been winners before, the Art Phelps, the Ralph Hocketts, theGeorge Smalls who were one of the three winners this time, the Bierbaums and Pendergrafts on
Sazarac Lane and the WilHam Waxners, also on Hwy. 20. There were three celebrants at the
Mobile Homes Fark, the John Bogans who won last year, the Jack Cummings, and Mrs. Violet
Hawson, Outside the Mobile Homes Park in the town we saw a beautiful picture at the McCreas.
The art work was done by Lucille herself. A huge painting of the Little Town of Bethelehem provided background for Joseph with Mary on the wee donkey who carried such a treasure, It was
beautiful. We have a lighted Manger Scene in our field with just the central figures. The Jack
Bixlers have Christmas lights outlining their home as do the Jim Wests and Mrs, Lanzendorfer.
The Coles and Helene Hurlbut have outdoor Christmas trees. The Wedding Chapel has a beautiful
Manger Scene, a heavenly blue star, some carolers, and miriads of lights. Santa complete with
reindeer still climbs the Beatie Hill led by Rudolph and his nose so bright. This year's awards
were given for the three best lighting effects. There are no categories no first to third places
and no repeat winners for the same scenes, .Winners named were the George Smalls on Randolph Lane, the William Sorensons on Mystery Lane and Mrs, Lisetta Scheave. at dhe Wegding.
Chapel on Hwy. 26. Living evergreen trees will be awarded the lucky three,’ °°" + = = ball
