FANTASTIC LAND OF, FUNGI
Cup-tungi, Peziza species,
Very attractive in spite of their small size, many of the Pezizas
are of a brilliant color, thus making them quite conspicuous to the
nature lover. The common name refers to the characteristic shape,
although many donot grow true to the form of a cup. They grow on
or in the soil as well as on decaying wood and other plant debris
and are found most commonly in the spring, however they are to be
found here in the fall season as well.
Due to the lack of edible substance and desirability, Pezizas are
not used for food but as far as research now knows, there are no
poisonous species. This particular one is of a brilliant orange red
in color, edged in black and is of a very brittle texture. Note the
interesting shape one of them has taken by pulling two edges together to form a hollow curved tube.
