Joe Houghteling Appointed Burns
To Take Heller's Place
On Highway Commission
(Continued from Page 1)
Heller, Nugget publisher, whoresigned from the highway group
last week.
In making the new appointment, the Governor said that as
Park Commission chairman
Houghteling “has proved his dedication to the preservation of California ‘s natural beauty. " Houghteling 's Park Commission experience, the Governor said, would
be invaluable to the Highway
Commission.
In his letter accepting Heller's
resignation, the Governor had
said, “I want you to know I will
try to find a successor whose philosophy coincides with yours. ”
Heller said today he was very
happy that Houghteling had been
chosen as his successor. In his
letter of resignation addressed to
the Governor, Hellerwrote, "Because of other long-standing and
prior commitments I find I cannot do the kind of conscientious
and effective job I would like to
do, My commitment to California
Tomorrow seems in fact more important to me every day, perhaps
in part because of my experience
on the Highway Commission. The
California Tomorrow program is
being expanded, and I am also
considering editing a new periodical which will address itself, I
hope in a constructive way, to
some of our growth problems, “
In reply, the Goveror. wrote
to Heller, “I am accepting your
resignation from the California
Highway Commission with the
deepest regret. Your fresh viewpoint, your concern overthe
state's growth and your commitment to excellence in public serAuto Association
Commends Board
The California State Automobile Association has commended
the State Motor Vehicle Pollution
Control Board for its refusal to be
stampeded into taking action at
this time to require the installation of exhaust control devices on
used cars.
The Board has withheld action
on such devices until its December 16 meeting because it has
determined that the previous estimates of the cost of such devices
have been unduly low.
Staff experts of the State Motor
Vehicle Pollution Control Board
have estimated that the cost of
installing the proposed exhaust
control devices will range from
$116.95 to $133.38 per vehicle,
