+ 8 the Nevada County Nugget Wednesday, December 3, 1969 Hundreds pour into downtown Grass Valley to greet Santa Claus ONE OF THE largest crowds in Grass Valley history flocked Cornish type Christmas sponsored by the Grass Valley Retail downtown last Friday to see the arrival of Santa Claus. The Merchants Committee was a complete success, #4 HERE COMES Santa Claus arriving on Mill Street with Mrs. Claus. The celebration carried on in Cornish tradition will be held on Mill Street from 6-9 p.m. every Friday until Christmas. id dosureof DeWitt again — recommended The second recommendation this year that at least part of DeWitt State Hospital be closed has been made by a state-level oe) This time, a state mental health task force proposes phaseout of DeWitt as a treatment facility for the retarded. Last January, Legislative Analyst A, Alan Pest recommended to the Reagan Administration that the entire hospital be phased out. ‘He had made similar recommendations in the past for Modesto State Hospital, and it is being closed now. DeWitt, like Modesto, is an old Army hospital and its wards are primarily barracks-type buildings from the World War Tl era, The DeWitt facility at Auburn presently serves the , Sierra mountain counties, including Nevada county. The mental health task force made this comment about DeWitt: "This facility is totally inadequate for most age groups and classes of retarded people, "The over-all impression is one of a makeshift temporary holding operation, namely providing emergency shelter to mentally retarded individuals." There were about 850 retarded persons at the hospital, more than half its population, at the time of the study. The taskforce said the hospital was understaffed and that "there seeme to be rather definite disagreement among the top professional staff"' . over the type of program to be conducted, The task force also was critical of "the continued use of punishment and isolation rooms, some without: a bed, providing only a mattress and blanket on the floor." The report added, ''No retarded children or adolescents should be admitted, both because of inadequate physical facilities and because of lack of expertise and interest to manage and treat this group of patients," Weimar given accreditation Lloyd Hamilton, Weimar Medical Center administrator, has receive word that the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals has approved the accreditation of the institution for a period of three years, This was the result of the evaluation _of the hospital survey conducted in October of this year, The medical staff and administration were commended for the evidence shown of quality patient care and that no major deficiencies were noted by the field representative, Classified Ads.”’
