Ae Kui , GATHERING MOSS oe Christmas Dinners Eaten From A Picnic Hamper Memories of Christmases past-~ how varied they are for us. It all began when we decided, one December 26th, that time was fleeting and we'd be married now, today, Every year since, to celebrate both Christmas and anniversary, we have taken a little trip, usually among the sand and sagebrush of our western deserts, Christmas dinners have come out of a picnic hamper but they have been eaten in some memorable places, There was that bitterly cold Christmas day on the Painted Desert of Arizona, Quite by accident, we had ringside seats for the annual gift giving from the people of Flagstaff to the Navajos, Parked in a great circle that Town Talk Cake Sale...Lola Montez... County Assessment Report Earl Covey, Grass Valley cakebaker, quietly brought in first prize money for his offering at the Liberal Arts sale at the Alpha in Nevada City before Christmas. Other entrants made a lot of boastful noise, while Covey sold his concoction for the highest price. sees 8 The name and profession of Grass Valley's most prominent former resident, Lola Montez, came up for technical definition in the Bavarian State Parliament last week and thoroughly incensed Mayor Jack Hodge of Grass Valley who is ever ready at the drop of a chemise to defend any slight inference against the character of the Mill Street entertainer. Seems that in 1848 King Ludwig I of Bavaria made such a fool of himself over the Countess of Lola M onte Z Lansfield (Lola) that his subjects bounced him off the throne, Prominent in the row to get Lola smeared and the king unfrocked was “The Privileged Company of Bamberg Riflemen." As punishment Ludwig disbanded the company, and although it was later reorganized, it was never again allowed to use the word “Privileged" in its title. To win back that right, the present members have been waging a debate that has attracted international attention to have Lola branded a prostitute. In the last session of the tribunal trying the case former Bavarian Premier William Hoegner argued: “One should take care to describe the lover of a monarch asa mistress, ” Mayor Hodge promptly cabled the Bavarian Government in defense of Lola: REGARDLESS OF SEMANTICS INVOLVED IN DESCRIBING MISS MONTEZ OF OUR CITY I KNOW AS MAYOR THAT WHEN SHE WAS A WELCOME PROPERTY OWNER IN THIS GOLD RUSH TOWN SHE WAS A LADY. Mayor Hodge paid for the cable out of his own pocket, ¢63esm6UchmUCU OU County assessor Charley Kitts says the county's 1965 assessment roll went_up 9.05 percent over the previous year. The increase represents a boost of $3,545, 000 inthe combined secured and unsecured tax assessment roll, which now totals $42,741,590. The average increase in the state is slightly over 7 percent. "Santa Was made us think of the covered miles from péople and civilizwagons of pioneers on the Santa vation, the silence was broken at Fe trail were the pickup trucks of the Navajos, From the bed of a big truck in the middle, those playing Santa Claus tossed packages tothe Indians thronged around, It was catch as catch can andno one knew what he would come up with,
These people wear the most shockingly intense colors, so the picture we recall is one of shifting, vivid hues, Another year we drove over a snow-covered road to Lundy Lake, cupped between 12,000 foot peaks west of Mono, In the clear air, Your Dollars California (EDITOR'S NOTE--This is the third in a series of articles on money and finance from the Bank of America). By Andrew Baldwin Each year about two million Californians -plusa half dozen cats and dogs -play Santa Claus to themselves well before Christmas, These are the members of “Christmas Clubs” now in effect in many California banks and savings institutions, Throughout December these membersreceived many millions in checks, It is, of course, money they had put in painstakingly every intervals by what sounded like the roaring of a huge wild beast. At first this terrifying sound seemed to be coming from the surrounding steep cliffs but as we picked our way down to the shore we traced it to cracks in the ice on the lake itself. Water was still running out the discharge at the bottom of thedam, we found, leaving an air space between the ice and the surface of the water. Astheice settled, air was forced under great pressure through cracks and holes, forming a gigantic musical instrument. Christmas other week during the last year and so they were in effect paying themselves back. It is hardly a gift, but it is a handy source of year-end funds to purchase gifts and pay other non-holiday expenses, such as annual insurance premiums which somehow always seem to coincide with the Yule season. The plan is simple. Anyone who joins a Christmas savings club signs an agreement to make regular deposits for a total of 50 weeks, The amount is up to the saver, but generally is required to be deposited in specified amounts, CRAYON CORNER OSCE OO SS OCH OVDFOSSS CGO DS OHECE OE EE OHESCE SOP Even more intriguing than the sound effects, however, were beautiful patterns in the ice. We never did solve the mystery of how they were formed, On other Christmases we have descended the narrow wagon trail in Titus Canyon that leads between thousand-foot cliffs to the floor of Death Valley, struggled up the steep grades into the bristlecone forest atop the White Mountains, slogged through drifts of snow into the ghost town of Bodie, and had all sorts of weird and wonderful adventures. Memories of Christrnases past -what treasures we cherish, Clubs The club year comes to an end in November when the savings checks are mailedout. There is, of course, nothing to prevent a person from redepositing a part or all of his savings into next year's account or a savings account and the accumulation ‘process begins all over again. Asa tule, the money put into a club account can be withdrawn at any time, which defeats its purpose. Partial withdrawals before the expiration of the 50 weeks generally are not allowed. It is either leave it all in or take it all out. (Continued on Page 15) Here" by Keely Phillips, Mrs. George's Second Grade, Bell Hill School S96T ‘Og Jequiedeg***3088nN AiuN0D epeAeN**
