STEADY RAINSOAKS THE COUNTY
Leaks, slides, clogged drains, wash outs, flooding, car
troubles, and frayed tempers tell the story of the physical toll
which has been exacted in Western Nevada County during the
past three weeks, due to an «nflagging series of storms,
Nevada City has gone over 50 inches.
, A few of the many recent storm caused troubles include:
~-A tree sank yesterday into the old Narrow Gauge tunnel
at Town Talk, blocking the Sutton Way shortcut,
--The D-S canal above Brunswick Road collapsed yesterday morning, flooding the Nevada County Horseman's recreation area.
--A slide at the Brunswick Road opposite the sawmill cut
a solid gash scross one lane of the two lane artery,
--Excessive runoff at Forest Glade subdivision in Grass
Valley at the west end of Main St. caused a flood of water and
mud on local streets, which city crews were bulldozing away
yesterday,
--There were numerous clogged or overflowing drains
and culverts in Nevada City and Grass Valley.

RAIN RECORD IS THREATENED
Over three weeks of steady, occasionally fierce rainfall
have produced some startling’ for Nevada County:
Latest forecasts indi continued rain through the weekend,
Since Dec. 11, Nevada City has had 39,9 inches of rain,
an average of over an inch and a half a day.
As of yesterday, the seasonal total was 50,82 inches in
Nevada City, and 50.29 in Grass Valley. The yearly total
usually averages about 54 inches in Nevada City. Yet the winter
is barely two weeks old.
At this rate, the all-time record of 89 inches recorded
for Grass Valley in 1890 could be smashed.
An indication of the extent of this year’s deluge can be
found in a comparison of the total as of Jan, 6 with the totals
to that date in the past four years. 1965: 50,82 inches; 1964: 17.65
inches; 1963: 30.94 inches; 1962: 13.75 inhes; 1961: 14.23 inches,
‘ Already, this season's total rainfall is greater than the total
through July 1 in three of the past five years.
wae” The biggest splash of rain in the current series of storms

total on the first of those days was 6,07.

the season, is checked by the Rev. Carl Sandbeck. “mere” three inches,
total will be “awfully close” to the alltime record of 89 inches,
recorded 75 years ago.
Rain totals in Western Nevada County are always a source of
wonder in closely adjacent areas of Northern California.
