Tom (the hero) and Amy Davis, managers, just got back
from their trip to Southern Calffornia where Tom saw his
youngest grandson for the first
time. I asked Tom how he got
that log up on top of Rosemary's roof in that terrible windstorm when he saved her roof
awning and porch from blowing
clear to Grass Valley. He told
me that "I tied it on my back,"
To this day he himself does not
know how he accomplished that
task,

Babies born this time of year
seem to be doubly blessed. Maybe environment has more effect
than we think, They just get born
into happiness, We are expecting
a new one in our community any
minute now. A neighbor reminded me of one born in our
community Dec, 27 inthe 1880's,
My informant was not sure of the
exact year. It was probably 1886,
Many old families of Rough and
Ready and Nevada City will re
member her, Miss Minnie Walters. Miss Walters is now living at the Oak Park Nursing
Home. and is not too well. The
Walters family had alovely farm
on Rough and Ready Road and
raised lots of fruit and vegetables. For 40 years Miss Minnie
drove the surplus into Nevada
City and sold it. First in a
wagon with a team of horses and
later in an old Dodge pick-up.
In the old wagon days she left
early in the morning and often
didn't get home until dusk of
the long summer evenings.
Minnie's experiences surely
mark the passing of an era.

What a wonderful time of year
this is. It's almost too exciting
for oldER "bags" like me. One
holiday at a time is really
enough, Especially when it gets
mixed up with a triptothe moon.
Just worrying about those men
kept us in a “tizzy". How they
had the courage to actually be
there is beyond me, As one commentator said they really had to
have confidence in that equipment. They must also have had
an enormous curiosity.

visiting there are lots of other
exciting things to see and do in

The winners are the Ken Beaties in the category
for children,
Mrs. Lisetta Scheave for best
religous display and the Bruce
Davidsons in best lighting cate
gory. The best religous display
was highhghted by a lovely blue
star. In the childrens display
Santa and his reindeer were taking: off over the treetops led by
Rudolph with his twinkling red
nose. There were many beautiful lighting displays. Mrs, Dixon on Ponderosa way had
an outstandingly beautiful lighting effect. The Sorensons at the end
of Mystery Mine Lane had a
beautifully done outdoor Christmas Tree. At the end of Rough
and Ready Road, the Sailors, way
up the Osceola Ravine Rd., the
Wilsons (last year's lighting category winner), and at the end of
a long winding lane, the Trauners
encouraged the raindrenched mud slogging judges
with outside displays, Runnerup in the childrens category was
the Bursill display.
Santa
already on the roof waved greetings as we drove up. Adding to
this scene was a garland of
evergreens over the door and
heavily laden red berry bushes

graced the white. picket fence
enclosing the yard. It was worth
the three rain-drenched nights
it took to decide, The lovely

presented to the winners.

Mr.
Manuel Frank passed
away last Saturday.morning. He
had been in the hospital for
some time. He would have been
83 years old on his next birthday. He is survived by a sister
Mrs, Marian Pletscher of Sacramento, a daughter Mrs. Doris
Trauner of Rough and Ready,
and a son Bill who has been
taking care of the ranch for
him since his illness. Manuel
really enjoyed his ranch and his
cattle.
