If necessary or required, use your tire chains. Your chances of sliding off the roadway into a ditch or being involved in an accident are greatly reduced. Use your brakes lightly — don’t slide your wheels. Try to use lower gears and let the engine compression slow your car. If the car does start to skid, it is usually because you are driving too fast, braking too hard and locking the wheels, or breaking traction by spinning the power wheels.
