Page 23..December 5, 1963..The Nugget. .Page 23 GATHERING MOSS Wild Blackberry Pie, By Joe Ruess There are a few classics in good eating which should be cherished _ and passed along for future generations as among the really fine things of life. One of these is wild blackberry pie, served hot or cold, with or without a topping of ice cream. I'm:mentioning this now because we haven't quite won our fight tokeep certain well-meaning but ill-advised government agencies from destroying the source of this delicacy, our roadside berry thickets. Last summer the State Highway Department discontinued the spraying with chemical weed killers of berry patches. along the highways. We are hoping that the County Agricultural Agent will follow suit in the coming season. Roadside plant growth reduces erosion on cuts and fills, it is less of a fire hazard alive than dead, it provides vital cover for both game birds and song birds, and it beautifies the scenic state and county highways in our mountain areas. ‘ 3 Now I am not suggesting tha we deny our farmers the help of their county agent in eradicating on their own land any plant that becomes a weed and restricts the growth of paying crops. But the roadsides belong to all of us and I believe that future generations too should be allowed to experience the down-to-earth pleasure of picking wild blackberries on hot summer days and converting them into the finest dish to grace a table, wild blackberry pie. Technically speaking, what we call wild blackberries inthe Mother Lode country aren't really wild berries at all but domestic garden berries, usually the Himayaya and Oregon Evergreen varieties, which have naturalizNU NEWS League Conference Proves NU Far From By Debby Thompson This year, the Sierra Foothill League Conference was held at NU. Representatives from Placer, Oroville, LasPlumas, Yuba City, Marysville and Roseville were met by NU representatives and the students got to know each other briefly during the short refreshment period that opened the.. day. The students then gathered in the library to discuss school ac~tivities and exchange ideas on fundraising projects. One activity that was suggested was a talent exchange within schools. The idea was that for every assembly the schools would send small groups of talented students around to give each school-an idea of what's being done in other schools and to help bring the schools closer together. Some schools liked the idea. Others said that their administrations would not ready to serve yOu ' day or night Fs 0. Sates 246 Sacramento St. The Worst! allow students out of class so much. Still others said that the exchange would be impossible because they weren't allowed to have assemblies due to the conduct of the students, aoe The delegates also discussed ways of earning money in school projects. Cake sales and bottle drives were among the many ideas discussed. The meeting seemed to-have accomplished a great deal. It showed that good old NU may not be the best school in the league but it isfar from being the worst! ++ +++ On Nov. 21, NU's band and chorus put on a program for the enjoyment of students, teachers, and the few parents who came. The chorus sang several spirituals. There were also several numbers by the ensemble and boy ‘s chorus. Theband played several numbers ranging from light classical to popular. : : ® bed A Roadside Delicacy ed. Ournative California blackberries actually do not produce nearly as well as these imported varieties. We have picked these blackberries along the roadsides from July to October by following the ripening crop fromthe lower elevations of the Sierra foothills up to the meadows and streambeds in the timber belt. Some of the best we ever ate we discovered beside an abandoned road off Highway 49 near North San Juan. That day the big -leaf maples were turning gold and beside the. berry patch a log was covered inches deep with lady bugs going into winter hibernation. Picking in these thorny thickets takes some know-how . Some carry along a sKort step-ladder and lay $23,000 Advance For Truckee Water Plan The White House has advised Congressman Harold T. However you doit, I think that your right to go a-berrying along the roadsides should be preserved as long as we preserve your rights to fish mountain streams and hunt for deer, quail and waterfowl. We can dowithout a Fish, Game and Berrying Commission though. Let's just let nature take its course and keep hands off. LOANS for You PROTECT YOUR FAMILY with CPS Baw saita,.
