NUGGET Photos by Bob Wyckoff AN ALLOUT ALARM..was answered by Ne‘vada City Volunteer Firemen Thursday morning at 11:20 a.m. at the home of Mr. and Mrs. George Card of 224 South Pine Street. In spite of wind and weather the Volunteers fought long and hard in every effort to save the burning building. The fire had a big head start, however, as flames and heavy smoke greeted the firemen on*their arrival. Origin of the fire which caused an estimated 80 per cent to total loss of the home, is unknown. It is believedto have started in the basement. It was feared for a time that the house next to the fire might also be consumed. Mr. and Mrs. Card were not at home at the time. The New Yorkers, with their bond issue money, will acquire predominantly open or natural lands for conservation and outdoor recreation. We rode over this around the center of N.C. County and Nevada City must be realistic and build today on what they have to build upon. The Gold Rush is past. Many of the relics of that date are dead and gone. The history of those days will never die. This is the livés of the people who lived during those years. They cut down the forest on the hills and canyons where today Nevada City Stands. A beautiful forest had to be cut and destroyed So a town might be built. Today a few old. landmarks will need to be sacrificed so a freeway may pass through. The landmarks had their day. They played their role in the past. The question is: Does Nevada City want a freeway or does it want old, DEAD landmarks? Our home says: “We want a LIVE Today.” A fine highway spells “EMPIRE.” We ii know that good roads mean EMPIRE. We want:a woni derful system of highways through the towns and into }the countryside. Anything } that stands in the way of . Empire is wrong. Empire is a community of thriving people, who have through their self responsibility earned and created an honest livelihood. A few -things like the enoe eS Sequoia tree, the Na[tional Hotel Annex, the ugly Otts Assay . . Office will not stand in the . way of progress. The cry i from our mountain home on {Banner Hill is “Empire, /Empire, Empire.” With wonderful, well built roads we shall build our EMPIRE. Without these roads we will fail. The tourist will come They will stop and see our colorful old gold’ mine towns. They will enjoy what is there of the Past, the ‘Present, and the Future. Most of all they will want ,te see the “back country,” the hills, creeks, forests, rivers, lakes and mountains. The people of Nevada Ccunty have yet to begin to build a string of first class recreational, scenic and historical parks. The nearest and most beautiful site for a wonder park is Banner Mountain. This 4000-foot high hill -belongs to both Grass Valley. and Nevada City. It belongs to all western Nevada County. A link to EMPIRE was created this Past summer when the California Division of Forestry built a new, wide, fine rock base road from the county road junction to the top of road for the first time Thanksgiving Day. Pr ple must, however, go up and down in low gear for safety. State Senator Ron Cameron and Assemblyman Paul Lunardi reassured us again that the proposed Banner Mountain State Gold Park will be realized. A beautiful, LIVE state park such as Banner Mountain will do our area far more good than a thousand dead buildings of the past. We repeat: Good roads lead: to Empire.
