HELLO THERE ! LIP CODE Letters To The Editor
When we arrived in Nevada County, we sensed
a change in people, First, for the first time in
many moons, we had people say hello! to us,
_ Speak real friendly and make us feel right at homes
It wasa good feeling, over in Grass Valley, they
made us. feel wanted. Here in Nevada City we
‘find the same good spirit. Its hello there, and
how are you at every turn. The friendliness in
our county is worthall the gold still underground,
in fact we would rather have it than gold, many
times.
Strangers inour office have noticed this and
have commented on it. Makes us feel quite
proud and now after a few days we are beginning
to catch the spirit and we now say Hello! to
everyone.
Another thing about our people in this region,
They eat out a lot. Most every evening there is
a dinner somewhere or people just get together
and go to a good eating spot. There are many of
them around so it is 1:9 problem. We will bet there
area lotof cold stoves around these evenings for
the folks are out to dinner and visiting friends.
This is good business for all concerned. There
must be about a hundred or ganizations around
here, all have good member lists and they like
to have dinner meetings, lunch meetings and some
of the more ‘izorous have breakfast meetings.
We are the meetingest people in the State of
California, that is how all the news and gossip
gets around.
Ally--uhave todo is tell someone something and
before the next day you will hear about it. This
is what we call in the book, good community
living! We don't need radio or television just go
to one of the group meetings and the word is out
on the grapevine, Now, we ask you; isn't this, the
good life? We like it; we like the weather; we like
the friends we have made and those we are making
but we just don't know what we are going to do
about the rain. Been living in the dry section of
California too long, I guess! Come on over for
dinner sometime!
HELPS A LITTLE
Nevada City was one oi
12 cities to participate in
arecent survey of the
effectiveness of the ZIP
Code and the response
indicated that while‘ the
code does not get a first
class letter to its destinationany faster, it also
will not slow it down.
The survey was made by
Horace Ayres, staff
writer for the Baltmore
Sun and a former staff
member of ‘The Nugget.
Ayres made the study in
response to several complaints that letters with
ZIP Code were sometimes delivered later than
those without the code.
Ayres made a random
sampling in 12 cities in
the United State including NevadaC ity, Monterey and Lodi in California, Boise, Idaho, Roseburg, Ore, Keokuk,
lowa; Lockport; NY,
Columbus, Ohio; St.
Paul, Minn, and Salisisbury and Cumberland,
Md. and Honolulu, Hawaii.
Three letters one with
the correct ZIP Code, one
without the code and one
with an incorrect code,
were mailed to newspapers in each of the 12
cities,
Itwas 25 years ago to this date that the Japanese Forces attacked
Pearl Harbor ina brutal surprise attack by mass planes that rendered
, untold damage and killed some 4,000 Americans! The Nugget is
indebted to our own George Brooks for the spectacular picture reproducedabove. Mr. Brooks, a Chief Petty Officer in the Navy with the
classification; Torpedo-Man. He was flown out to PearlHarbor
and spent weeks diving in salvage crews on sunken Men-of-War,
America went on to win the war and overthrow the Japanese war
Leaders, reconstituting a new Japanese Government, that is today
our staunch ally in the Far East.
The memory of Pearl Harbor is strong in all of us who were alive
25 years ago onthe ''Day of Infamy.'' We do not celebrate Pear] Harbor, but we observe the anniversary as a reminder of what did happen on that fatal day, December 7, 1941.
To the Editor
The first thing that I
liked in the Nuggett was
the poem about the
bridge. I think I helped
build it a good many
years ago, it was called
(I think) the Bridge of
Sighs. But I hope that I
never have to go over it
again. ;
Mainly a young lad and
lassie will, and they to
will knowwhen they get
old and gray whatI mean.
They'll have many happy
memories.
The other story I like is
about your cat Percy, I
love all animals even the
rats that used to live in
the mines. When the
men ate their lunch they:
would set on your leg and
the miners fed them.
Any man that tried to hurt
them would get his block
knocked off, he gota
beating and then fired.
The rats savedmany
mens lives in the mines,
you see when the men
seen the rats running out
of a stoppe they knew it
was going to cave and they
would get out in time.
Years ago when sailing
ships were. Many came
in to San Francisco the
rats saved a good many
sailors lives. If the ship
‘was going to have any
bad trouble the rats would
leave the ship. That is
why I like all animals I
know the rat is a rodent
and not an animal so. what!
I wouldnot be here today
if it was not for the rats
in a certain mine where
I worked.

To The Editor:

about "legalized abortion." This is a very *
controversial subject.
Our home is opposed to 3m
any type of abortion. :
Pregnancy is natural,

agree that ill health, and
often death will follow the
girl or woman who commits an abortion. Men
and women ought to learn
cooperation. Respect is
love: and Love is respect. Parenthood is natural. A self-controlled
sized family must become areality. Pregnancy when it comes,
(even the so-called mistakes) will bring blessings, rather than a
curse. Of course, there
will always be the exception. To legalize human
abortion would be wrong,
harmful. This act will
down -grade humanity and
make progress a mockery.
ANOTHER SUBJECT:
A 204 page Document
called, The Dilemma of
Mental Commitments in
California just reléased.
This is a two year report study by the Assembly Subcommittee on
Mental Health Services,
by the chairman: Nicholas C. Petris. It is
most important that the
citizens'of Nevada County write and make known
their views upon the
subject. The Booklet (by
the above name) isa
strong indictment of
California's present Mental Health Laws. Remember, that without the
basic right to the care
of one's own body and
mind all Civil Rights are
nulland void. Our great
goal and noblest work is
to regain man's lost basic
freedoms. Thank you.
Please write your views
to the Subcommittee in
Sacramento.
Sincerely
Mr. and Mrs. Baima
