“Notes off the Cuff’
~ By Py Smith
Quoting from a national printing trade journal, American
Press, of recent issue: "If you
have some problems with the
U. S, Postal Service, jot down
this name and address and keep it
handy. (We don't know how long
this will last because it sounds
just too much: like a good thing,
and most ofus are unaccustomed
to good things from the Federal
Government):
Mr, David L. Ordway
U. S, Postal Service
Dept. of Consumer Affairs
Washington, CD. C, 20260.
"Mr. Ordway is the new ombudsman for the Postal Service
..and not any too soon, either."

I've never been too crazy about
the so-called’ "comic strips"
featured in many newspapers.
Too many are just too much,
and some are downright silly.
But .. there’s one bright example of good clean wit and humor, plus a basic pathos, and
that is to be found in the fabulous "Peanuts" strip by Schulz,
I recently attended the NUHS
production of "You're A Good
Man, Charlie Brown" and thoroughly enjoyed every minute of
the friendly, intimate visit with
the "Peanuts" gang. The youthful cast enthusiastically projected their characterizations
into a reality which did net fade
with the final curtain. .I'm still
chuckling. Congratulations,
kids! You really topped some
professional productions of the
show.

is a case of "more truth than
poetry" more often than not,

I-saw a man standing on the
corner of Broad and Pine the
other day looking intently at the
County Courthouse building. . .at
least that's what he appeared to
be doing. Anyhow, a few minutes
later he came into the Nugget
office and inquired. .seriously
.."Is that the Nevada County
Courthouse?" We assured him
that it was, indeed, and he walked
out muttering something we
didn't catch. Some days are like
that!

To me, most spiders are rather obnoxious .. but the other
day I watched one in total fascination for about 15 minutes, Ihad
spilled a few cat food pellets
(little round ones flavored with
fish.. which my pixilated
pussies love) on the steps of my
mobile home. This big, stubbylegged, rather "furry" type spider came along, apparently
minding his own spidery business ..and ran into one ofthe
pellets, He backed off aninch..
charged the pellet like a
battering ram, and kept this up
until he had it off the steps and
on the ground below. That goal
attained ..he sat on top of the
pellet and surveyed the area
carefully for several minutes
. then rolled it slowly and carefully under the porch steps and
out of sight. I am wondering if
he's trying to hatch it?

"It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas everywhere you go." Rough and Ready gets
its Christmas face Friday night, Dec. 10. Sure hope we have better weather than the Cornish
Christmas in Grass Valley has been getting on Fridays. The tree lighting program will start
at 7 p.m, at the community tree infront of the post office. Everyone may bring an outdoor ornament if they wish. There will be community carols and a "Christmas Present" presented by
the 4-H Club; The club is also having a cake auction with Supervisor Larry Filer conducting
the bidding. Santa will be there through the courtesy of our Rough and Ready Volunteer Fire
Department. Hot drinks for everyone will be served by the chamber. There will be candy for
the children. Chairman Lisetta Scheave invites you all to come and sing aes with us,

The Grange Party is Saturday night beginning with a Christmas potinels at 6:30 p.m
At the invitation of their new lecturer, Connie Baer, the Newcomers Lyric Ensemble of Nevada
‘county will sing the Christmas music portion oftheir program. Clarence Treadway will do some
old-fashioned fiddling. Mrs. Olyve Simmons. will dd some unexpected things with the Night
Before Christmas. The Lyric Ensemble is a county wide group but it seems like Rough and
Ready because our director is Mrs, Ken (Helen) Beatie of our community, Busy as the Beaties
are now, with two families of grandchildren, Helen still finds time for weekly practice sessions
with the group. There are six other members of the 26 voices, Violet Hawson, Barbara Miller,
Beulah Shearer, Olyve Simmons, Elaine Vogt and myself from the Rough and Ready area, One
of the ensemble feature numbers this year is Gesu Bambino by Frederick Martens and Pietro
Yon, It's a beautiful number and with the soprano obligato sung oy Mrs, Beulah Shearer it
takes on extra beauty. *~

Last week's snow storm certainly enhanced the feeling of Christmas in the air. All
signs of snow have vanished from our own area but it's still beautiful just a few short miles
up Highway 20. When Mmes. Connie Baer, Violet Hawson, Lisetta Scheave and I attended the
Historical Society's annual dinner in Nevada City last Sunday evening we were thrilled by the
beautiful outdoor lighting already glowing in that area. In its snowy setting it really looked
like a storybook Christmas.

Program portion of the Historical Society dinner was a speech by Governor Newton
Booth, Shade of Booth doing the speech was Dr, Arch McPherson, The original, done in Nevada City in 1572 fitted many of our situations today showing the former California governor's
grasp of his country's problems. One phrase " — the people are responsible for every public
abuse —" strikes me as particularly significant, Much as we complain about taxes, and of
course some.other things, with our remarkable form of government it is obviously our own
fault that we have allowed our public officials to get us-into this situation. The old biblical
parable .says separate the bundle of sticks and you can break each one separately and this
is surely what they do to us on every issue that affects their own or their backer's pockets.
Since’ we haven't learned in the bast 100 years it seems unlikely that we will improve in the
near future.

We had as much fun putting up outdoor Christmas decorations in Rough and. Ready last
Sunday as groups have singing Carols on Christmas Eve, We arrived with greens and big
peppermint sticks and red bows at people's doors and were greeted with true Christmas
spirit. The ladies of the committee met last week and wrapped the big sticks with their red
stripes and tied the big bows. Mmes, Helen Brown and Irene Lanzandorfer both brought truck
loads of greens and these decorations were tied to front gate posts with old fashioned wire from
our bales of hay. Afterwards we had coffee and cake and friendly chatter. Stan Baer, Harold
Brown and John Schuster provided the manpower and Conne Baer, Annabelle Dick, Irene Lanzendorfer, Winifred Schuster and I decorated the entryways while Violet Hawson prepared
the huge wreath for the Blacksmith Shop. Chairman Lisetta Scheave put the whole thing together.

Seems like the temporary closing of the old Nevada Theater, which has dragged out so
long, is about to end. Everyone involved seems determined that the theater shall be reopened
for the new gas lights on Broad Street. Seems that the old building is remarkably sound after all.

I hope all of you saw the delightful picture of Miss Nola Vogt and her prize Cheviot
Yearling Ram in the news recently. Nola entered five sheep in the Grand National Livestock
Exposition at the San Francisco Cow Palace and won four awards, Competition was very keen.
There were 1,100 head of sheep entered from the four western states. Nola is conducting an
experiment with crossing Hampshire and Cheviot breeds. She selected the Cheviot for its
early maturity and the Hampshire for its blocky meat producing qualities, Her project seems
to be doing very well. The William Vogts live on Lower Bridgeport Road, I always know when
Nola goes on these interesting exhibitor's junkets because we miss Elaine Vogt at our singing sessions, Mother and daughter both seem to enjoy the shows.

Mrs. Lisetts Scheave spent Thanksgiving with her son and his family in Auburn, It's
wonderful for her to have her family so close. Daughter Jacqueline Kelly lives in Sacramento,
There is another daughter also close by but it has not been my privilege to know her as yet.
