. Gleanings from the Goldpan
: The week on NUHS campus —
AS WE SEE IT
ARE YOU READY FOR CHRISTMAS?
The Senate refused by a 9-14 vote to approve a constitutional amendment to lower the drinking
age from 21 to 18.The bill was by Assemblyman Robert Cline, R-Canoga Park,
A reason for not passing this bill’ was that it would result in more traffic violations and
accidents .involving. drunken driving. Yet, legislators gave final approval allowing youths (teenagers) to get contraceptives from physicians without parental consent. In following their line of
thinking, will this not encourage further promiscuity?
Our servicemen between the ages of 18 and 21 are responsible and ADULT enough to defend,
represent and many times die for our country. These very same "adults" are refused the right to
drink because they aren't responsible enough to handle it. We were given the right to vote which is
an adult privilege and responsibility. Many of us between the ages of 18 21 are on our own, earning a living, and in many cases raising and supporting a family, all adult responsibilities.
We feel that since we have many responsibilities of the adult world, we have earned their
privileges too.

Many concerned teachers are meeting once a week to discuss whether or_not they are getting
through to their students, Drama and English instructor Robert Gamage plans to hold these meetings each Wednesday morning. He hopes to have the teachers sit in each other's classes and then
make suggestions at the next meeting. The objective is for teachers to see each other's methods,
to discuss their good and bad points, and if their teaching methods are effective, Through these.
discussions, teaching methods may be improved, he believes.

Registration renewal notices mailed
California's Cepartment of
Motor Vehicles this week is
mailing registration renewal notices to the owners of ten million automobiles, two million
trucks, 1.3 million trailers, 560,
000 motorcycles and half a mil‘lion boats.
The owners of at least two
million of . these 14.4 million
vehicles and vessels wiil take
advantage of the early renewal
opportunity, paying their 1972
fees in advance of the Jan 1
due date. Most of the rest will
renew during January. A million others will stand in line
during the final days, including
Feb. 4, 1972, deadline for registering without penalty. After the deadline other thousands
will pay more than they would
have had to.
"At least,"’ says Director of
Motor Vehicles Robert C. Cozens, "that's the pattern of the
past."
Cozens has this advice for
recipients of renewal statements: "If the statement is
correct, it can be mailed to
DMV's local or Sacramento office with a check or bank draft
in the exact amount of the billing. The sticker will be mailed to you.
"Better yet, get in the 'express' line at your nearest DMV
office and walk out with your
1972 sticker.
"If you still own the vehicle
but the statement no longer reflects the true situation because
of a change of name, address,
license number, etc., bring the
statement to the nearest DMV
office with all documents that
explain the discrepancy. Do
this early."
get reminders about a month
ahead of registration anniversary of the vehicle, as part
of an experiment in year-round
renewal, ,
The traditional courtesy registration counters in many metropolitan banks will not be open
until January, Cozens said,
Cozens explains that the DMY
computer has been printing 350,
000 aday of the 12x3 inch punched
cards through the month of October and half of November.
They were stuffed in envelopes,
and bagged for the U.S, mails,
well in advance of the Dec. 1
renewal kickoff.
That's why, if someone traded
in an older vehicle for a new
one: during October-November,
he may get a notice to re-register a vehicle he no longer
owns, He should destroy the
notice. The new vehicle's card
will reach him later, after a
catch-up computer run.
8x3 inch boat sticker is red.
Some 100,000 owners of mctorcycles bought on or after

renewal notices now. They will
