Re, garbage and the hauling thereof: Technically, as of this writing, only people living inside the Colfax City limits and this end of Nevada county may use the Colfax dump. Some people living within a mere beer bottle toss of it cannot use it. This silly situation was brought about when the Placer County Board. of Supervisors withdrew their finacial support of the dump. It is estimated that more county people than ~ Colfax people have always used the facility. Some Placer county residents drive long distances, bypassing pay dumps, to unload free at Colfax. The withdrawal of county funds has put the city of Colfax in a financial bind for the dump. Right now it is open weekends only. Colfax Fighway area residents in Nevada county may haul their trash there with head held high. Their county board renewed the agreement and financial aid with the Colfax council. for this fiscal year. Maintaining the dump has been a constant pain in the clavicle for the council. There were complaints about the smoke until burning was banned, Then it was the rats. There have been problems meeting fire laws and with the equipment. New anti-pollution regulations plague the councilmen. Chicago Park people have been traditionally tied to Colfax. It is three miles distant; Grass Valley is nine. Many of them do the bulk of their shopping there, dine out, attend church and other fuctions there. Several Chicago Park residents work in Colfax. Therefore it has been convenient to dump there. Now the Colfax City Council longs to get out of the garbage © business. If Chicago Park area. people are excluded from using the dump before this fiscal year expires, there will be some financial return to our county coffers. If this should happen, until other plans are firmed, it would be "Feigh Ho and off to the McCourtney Dump we go.” Meanwhile, dump in peace. Just up the hill from us, there is no fog, asthe altitude is just enough higher to escape it. The situation here, altitude-wise, permitted the old settlers to plant some pretty tropical things, such as palm trees, oranges, oleanders, etc. There are two date palms and a small orange treehere, probably planted 100 years ago.
