Supervisor William E, Thomas, Tuesday filed his expected
report on the status of Civil Defense in Nevada County at the
regular meeting of the Board of Supervisors, Mr, Thomas was
recéntly designated by the Board of Supervisors as Director of
Civil Defense and Disaster in accordance with ordinance 355,
on Civil .
In his four page report to the Board, hepointed out that current
activity in the realm of Civil Defense in Nevada County is at
a standstill, Nothing has been done during the past year, The
lack of training of people to act in case of extreme emergency,
and the need for suitable equipment to do the job was pointed
out in the report, :
_ Previously we put together a plan for Civil Defense, and filed
it with the State and Federal Agencies, however, due to our
lack of activity in carrying out our plan it now appears that we
have lost our eligibility for any State or Federal Aid, he states,
Now it is our prime responsibility to get a pears reorganized,
start training soth at we can requalify for aid we need to
coordinate our efforts in the matter of Civil Defense.
It is evident from Supervisor Thomas* report that we have a
few tools with which to work, but it is imperative that we do
more, He recommends that we consider the appointment of a
full time co-ordinator of Civil Defense, Our County is in a
position of danger from disaster, from floods, at all times,
Any National Emergency would catch us unready to take care ©
of ourselves, Since there is help and equipment available if
we prepare for it, there is every reason to support Mr, Thomas*
reasoning, It is up to the Board to act now and act thoroughly
in order that our people may be protected against any unforLEGAL NOTICE *.
