Publishers Association sounded the first note when it
awarded the Nevada County Nugget three prizes at its recent convention.

. This prophetic headline.was-fulfilled when theJudges of.
the Better Newspaper Contest handed the Nevada County
Nugget the following:
First Place in the Nugget's statewide category for BEST
SPECIAL ISSUE by a weekly. In making the presentation
they said, "A genuine nugget tops in all criteria used in
determining judgment by committee. "
In BEST TYPOGRAPHY (WEEKLIES) the Merit Award noted,
"Nevada County Nugget, Nevada City, Clean, compact
use of vintage masthead face sets the reader up for a thoroughly uncluttered paper, "
For BEST NEWSPAPER PROMOTION by a weekly the judges'
Merit Award referred to the Nugget's promotion as an "exceptionally fine effort". Further, they commented that the
Nugget should feel proud in this category where many
papers of considerably larger circulation were represented, :

The award for Newspaper Promotion is simply an award
' for an advertising campaign. The Nugget throughout 1964
took its sales message to the public, Original art work was
used to make advertisements distinctive and atrractive.
Color was used often and effectively, The copy let you
the reader, know what we had to offer. Of course awards.
are only valuable if they are coupled with success at
home, The first recognition of our paper came from the
readers and advertisers in Western Nevada County. 1964
was a bigger and better year for the Nugget. More news
linage, more special editions, more color and increased
advertising.
So first a thanks to all of you at home and a special thanks
to our fellow newspapermen throughout the state for their
