A reward of $150 will be paid
for information leading tothe location and recovery of the.small
tombstone pictured here, andthearrest and conviction of those
who stole it from the Historic
Pioneer Cemetery at Red Dog,
Nevada County, Calif. The theft
took place about the first wee:
in January, 1970,
Undersheriff Frank Gallino
said that the reward has been
posted by the Nevada City Odd
Fellows Lodge, since the dese-.
cration was committed in the
Odd Fellows' section of the old
cemetery.
Gallino. also said that there are
mounting reports of vandalism to
cemeteries around the state, and
he warned that his department is
prepared to deal firmly with this
crime in Nevada County, and he
asks the cooperation of all responsible citizens in reportingto the sheriff's department any
suspicion of cemetery vandalism, such as: tombstones being
used for any purpose in a private home, for instance, door
steps, patio paving slabs, coffee
tables, or other illegal uses;
also small grave markers or
"fgotstones" made into bookends, or any other use; also
cemetery signs or other objects
being used or displayed in @
private home.
The stolen monument marked
the’ graves and the sad mem-~
ories of two .of the first
children of Thomas P. Blue
and his wife, Philinda (Smith).
The 2-year old baby, Guy,
died of "scald" from a kettle
of boiling liquid being spilled
onto him from the stove, His

fire permits
are required
Grass Valley residents are
reminded that fire permits are
required for open and incinerator burning at all times, Fire
permits for 1970 are now being
issued every Thursday evening
from 7 to 9 p.m. and from 9
a.m, to noon the last Saturday
of the months, during February,
March and April only. All fire
permits will be issued at City
®" Hall, Grass Valley.
All residents are urged to obtain their fire permits during
the above months as no permits
will be issued after April, with
the exception of ueely arrived
residents.
Fire permits may also.be obtained by mailing the 1969 fire
permit with a self-addressed
stamped envelope to the Grass
