= oe Pag 6 The Nevada County Nugget, Wednesday, February 11, 1970 Board orders study of general hospital wiring A study of the electrical system at Nevada General Hospital to determine how dangerous it is and what improvements are needed was authorized by Nevada county's supervisors Tuesday. A survey to be made by a San Francisco firm of electrical engineérs, Coke and Chun, will cost $2,500, Paul Byrne of the —hospital's— advisory committee told the board. The supervisors authorized Administrator Robert Costley to proceed with having the sur_ vey made and to try to find the money to pay for it within his budget. Costley said he expects an $8,000 reimbursement from Medicare before long, part of which could be applied to the study. Byrne cited three problems found in a quick survey of the wiring last year by a state engineer. These were: 25 and 30 amp fuses where only 15 and 20 amps should have been used; the main switchboard was warm to the touch during non peak load periods, meaning the switchboard was carrying more current than it was designed to carry; and an emergency generator. intended to pick up the entire hospital load wasn't large enough. (Since then, a second generator has been obtained.) Costley said he is ''very concerned about patient safety. The wiring might go on for some Board studies open space amendment An amendment adding an open space provision to the county zoning ordinance was studied by the board of supervisors this week, However, action was delayed until next Tuesday so County Counsel Leo Todd can make certain the technical language will allow the -change to fit properly into county codes, The amendment drew no controversy at Tuesday's public hearing. It was not the controversial scenic corridor ordinance as The Union incorrectly indicated in an article Monday. The amendment will permit open space zoning for things such as golf courses in new recreational residential subdivisions, At present, singlefamily zoning usually is applied to such areas. Dave Barber, former Placer county planner, drafted the proposal, Barber now is a private planner working on the GlenShire development in eastern Nevada county and wanted open space in that development zoned that way. Since Nevada county didn't have an appropriate .zone, the planning commission asked Bar_ber to draft an amendment. The planning commission unanieh Soe ea PSs time, but the sooner we get it .started, the better off we'll be." Chairman Willie Curran said if there is an electrical hazard, the county would be liable if something happens. "If this were an industrial complex,"’ Byrne commented, "I would expect to see some of management concerned because of possible liability." Supervisor Ralph Buchanan,
2a member of the hospital advisory committee, said that once a plan is made, rewiring can be done over two or three years, The supervisors also accepted a priority list of improvements at the hospital as recommended by the advisory committee. Activity has started or will soon on the first three items: crash, bars on doors, kitchen remodeling and wiring survey. The committee also recommended that the oil furnace be converted to natural gas to save money and that the maintenance department space be converted for expansion of physical therapy. In a letter, Costley asked that he be put on the agenda once each month to report on hospitalactivities.
