Wednesday, Februory 12, 1969 The Nevada County Nugget 5 Compiled, Edited and Copyrighted by NEWS ACCOUNTING SERVICE 1969 Auburn, California By Lester A. Halpin Auburn (pop. 7,000 est.) seat of Placer county, situated on the American river about 30 miles northeast of Sacramento, is one of the oldest cities in California not founded by Spanish-speaking settlers. The town that was to become Auburn had its beginning in May, 1848, when Claude Chana, an immigrant from France, with Several companions, pitched a tent on the site and found three gold nuggets in a panful of gravel. (May 16 is observed each year as Founders’ Day.) Auburn first was called North Fork Dry Diggings or Wood's Dry Diggings. In 1849 the settlement became known as Auburn. One account says a doctor from Auburn, N, Y. chose the name. Another account says some former soldiers from New York suggested it, while still another version insists the name came from Goldsmith's The Deserted Village "Sweet Auburn, loveliest city of the plain," but Auburn is not on a plain, Numerous buildings of last century survive in the Lower Town section of Auburn today, but the heart of the business district has moved uphill. Many other changes have taken place since Auburn's early years, Annual gold production in‘.all of Placer county now totals only about $6,000 and the sand and gravel in which nuggets once glistened have become the county's most valuable mineral resource. After gold fever subsided in this Mother Lode country, fruit trees were planted on the surrounding hillsides and the harvest of plums, pears and other fruits, plus nur ‘stock, add much to the present economy of Auburn. The city,~which is served by the Southern Pacific Railroad, is the site of a remanufacturing plant which makes a wide range of wood products such as trim, molding, box shook, pre-cut door jam ‘sets and specialized stock. Another plant makes conveyor belting. Auburn also is a shipping point for poultry products, including turkeys.
