The Nevada County Nugget o
Gold Rush measure
A bill to stimulate and coordinate preservation of Mother
Lode and gold rush history has
been “introduced : by. Assemblyman Gene Chappie (R-E] Dorado
County).
Called the Mother Lode Historical Preservation Commission Act of 1969, the bill
would establish a seven-man
commission to ‘initiate, stimulate, coordinate and implement"
efforts by local government and
private entities. ‘The commission's jurisdiction would include
a range of specified counties
from Butte on the north to Madera on the south, and Alpine,
Mono, Yuba and Sacramento.
Adjacent counties with related
gold historical areas would also
be under the commission's jurisdiction.
"I am concerned", said Chappie, "that unless we take immediate steps, the great heritage of
the Mother Lode will be either
lost or destroyed forever. The
discovery of gold at Coloma in
1848, was the direct cause of
ties making up the Mother Lode.
The commission would be authorized to -accept donations
from. any private or public
source to implement its purposes and would be deposited in
a Mother Lode Historical Preservation Fund. The bill asks for
a $25,000 appropriation, principally to hire an executive secretary with an assistant to implement the commission's directives.
