North San Juan fire
victims getting help
On the night of January 9 fire totally
destroyed the modest North San Juan
home of Walt and Lorraine Fellows but
_since that time the community has rallied
to their support in a variety of ways. ©
“Were not sure how the fire started
but when we got there theplace
was pretty
well gone,” Lorraine said as she looked at
the ashes of what was her home. ‘‘The day
after the fire two of our North San Juan
neighbors came up and volunteered to help
us rebuild. They wouldn’t take no for an
answer,” she said in a somber voice.
The weekend after the tragedy the
Fellows moved into the garage of Mrs.
Fellows brother and donations from area
residents started pouring in. They included clothing, a refrigerator, beds and
to set up
just about everything else needed
housekeeping. ‘We lost everything, all we
had was the clothes we were wearing plus
our freezer which was out in the shed,”’ she.
commented.
Nearly a month later the place where the
home once stood is still covered with ashes
and the remains of a refrigerator and
stove but next to it sits a foundation for
their. new home:
‘People are wonderful, you don’t know
how many friends you have until tragedy
strikes,’ Mrs. Fellows said. With Mr.
Fellows unemployed, he was laid off at a
lumber company, and not having insurance, the pair was in a real bind until
the community came to their aid.
All materials for the new home have
been donated by Nevada county
and the labor is being done by
businesses
numerous North San Juan residents.
