4. To build something permanent or make some lasting
improvement, no matter how
small, for the enjoyment and
benefit of future generations.
How can you do this? Here
are some suggestions on what
you can do to commemorate the
ing 200th birthday of the United
States:
A. Speak up at meetings of the
organizations you belong to.
Make sure that each
organization sponsors at least
one special event, program or
project commemorating the
Bicentennial. If your group has
an annual event, dedicate it to
the Bicentennial in 1976.
B. Contact your Chamber of
Commerce, City council, or
other agency to form an official
Bicentennial Committee in your
locality if one has not already
been organized.
C. Volunteer your services
and leadership to the Bicentennial Committee that is -formed in your community.
Suggest worthwhile practical
programs and projects for 1976
.. things that need doing in your
area. Then help to do them!
D. Whether or not you belong
to an organization, here are
other things you can do, as an
individual, for the 1976 Bicentennial Celebration:
1, Pledge that you will display
’ the American Flag at your home
and place of business during
1976.
2. Plan now to plant beds of
red, white, and blue flowers and
golden colored flowers
representing our gold rush
heritage. Consult your nurseryman and prepare for
colorful Bicentennial gardens in
1976.
3. If you. are employed in
Nevada county, get the: boss to
okay the wearing of oldfashioned costumes during 1976.
If you’re .the boss, encourage
costumes at work where
feasible. Agree on basic styles
and theme. (Remember,
costumes can save you money
on your regular wardrobe.)
4. Again, if you work in
Nevada cofinty, encourage your
employer to display historical
photos, artifacts, etc. portraying
the heritage of your area. These
could-be displayed in store
windows, public buildings, etc.
Cities and towns in the county
could feature historical displays
in store windows up and down
the street. These could be
publicized as part of ‘“‘‘Nevada
county” which residents and
visitegs alike could follow to
relive“our history.
5. If you possess historical
photos, artifacts, etc., offer
them for display with a credit
line, to a merchant wishing to
participate.
6. If you are an employer in
the county, ask your chamber of
commerce or _ merchants’
association to promote the
above displays, or go it alone.
You will attract much favorable
attention to your place of
business.
7. If. possible, plant a tree on
your property. Stage a ‘family
dedication ceremony,’’ identifying the tree as a. permanent
reminder of the 1976 Bicentennial.
8. Encourage the youngsters
to join in at their schools, and
with youth organizations, to
launch clean-up programs,
‘ landscaping projects, etc., to
improve your community’ Ss
appearances.
9. Paint up, clean-up, and fix
up your own property and neighborhood where _ possible.

the best ever.
11. Be sure that’ the
organizations you work with
notify the Nevada _ county
American Revolution Bicentennial Commission of the
programs they sponsor. In this
way, your programs can be
included in a county-wide
“Calendar of Events”’
which__will be given wide
distribution and publicity.
‘Rumors not true’. Sierra
Mental Health head says
Citizens Wednesday recommended their final priorities for
the proposed Sierra View
Mental Health county plan and
the mental health director
denied rumors concerning
Sierra View’s present program.
“There is absolutely no truth
to a couple of rumors that hit
us,”’ Dr. Bob Smith said. He told
the group a Sacramento
newspaper reporter had queried
him concerning allegations that
Sierra View encouraged sex and
pornographic literature in
working with some of -the
mentally ill and retarded. He
said he advised the reporter the
rumors had no foundation. He
suggested implementation of a
“rumor control center’ would
be in order.
The meeting held in the
mental health conference room
in. the Health, Education and
Welfare Building was a follow
up of last month’s community
meeting when individual groups
selected priorities to be considered at the final session.
The Substance Abuse group
agreed the top need in its area is
continuation of Sierra View’s
existing contract with the
Nevada County Council on
Alcoholism. Other recommendations high on the list were
establishment of a medical
detoxification center in
cooperation with local medical
personnel and peace officers;
continue antabuse and other
medicine for alcoholics.
A day treatment care center
at Sierra View was top
recommendation for the
General. Mental Disability
Program. Others included increased services to the elderly
and more emphasis on public
relations for dissemination of
information concerning
programs offered.
Increased cooperation
between Sierra View and the
Nevada County Workshop and
Youth Self Help was the first
priority for Continuing Care.
~Other. Recommendations included the psychiatrist making
home visits on an ongoing basis
to those unable to come to the
clinic.
The Children and Youth
Committee emphasized a need
for all pay ay dealing
with children to cooperate and
coordinate efforts. More
community education to
strengthen families was another
recommendation.
All concurred that more
volunteers are needed in all
programs and ideas were advanced on methods to create a
volunteer center.
Fineings of the community
group will be incorporated in a
plan which will go to the Mental
Health Advisory before it
reaches county supervisors for
approval.
