BERKELEY---T he 1962 Holi‘day season was one of the
‘better ones for California's
‘Christm as tree growers.
More home-grown trees were
‘widely sold out, reports Ed
E. Gilden, forester for the
University of California
‘Agricultural Extension Service.
He adds only two caution-.
ary notes. First, the drop in
tree imports came mainly
because the needlesetting
frosts came late in Washington and were followed by
heavy rains that slowed harvest. Second, imports of

Aluminum trees, he said,
did not sell as well as expected. Many stores have
large carry-overs.

WHAT'S
G. 0. Hutchins, your Telephone Manager in Nevada City
“PINHEADS”—that’s what telephone people call these little diodes,
first cousins to the transistor. And
no wonder, it would take more than
1,000 of them to fill a thimble! Designed by Bell Telephone Laboratories, each pinhead’s a little sandwich
of specially treated silicon wafers
with glass in the middle. It’s heatbonded, plated with nickel and gold,
and comes out a whopping 35-thousandths of an inch in diameter by
15-thousandths thick.
But looks are deceiving. Pinheads
do a big job as super-sensitive
“gates”, or switches, for controlling . .
current flow in electronic circuitry.
They’reusedin computers for missile
and space projects, and will ultimately be used in the highspeed electronic telephone switching systems of tomorrow.

On Thursday, Jan. 31,
Berry Halverstadt, Grass Valley splicers,
were in Downieville doing routine telephone:
maintenance work. Little did they know when
they stayed over Thursday night; that the
next day they would find Downieville without telephone service and all roads to the
outside washed out.
They weren't long in finding the
the main cable on the west side of Downieville. The entire area was under water, but
by noon they had repaired the break and
Downieville again had normal telephone service.
It was three days later before the fellows.
were able to return to Grass Valley.

'62 Xmas Tree Business Good
is jopravine, he said. Many
cities have been replacing
low-grade street trees with
beautifully decorated
boughs.
Douglas fir, the largest
import item, made up 69
per cent’ of the total California Christmastree market
this holiday season, said
Gilden. White fir, popular
with California growers,
held 19 per cent of the market. Red fir made up7 per
‘cent, pine 3 per cent, and
Scotch pine less than 2 per
cent.
The pre-Christmas prices
quoted to growers, he said,
were approximately as follows:
At the roadside or woods
Christmas tree yard choice
silvertip firs, 65 to 75 cents
a foot; choice white firs, 55
cents a foot; pine, 40 cents
a foot; and boughs in 25foot bales, $1.75 a bale.
At the Los Angeles wholesale yard silvertip, $1 to
$1. 10 a foot; white fir, $1 a
foot; Scotch pine, 75 cents
pine 90 centsa foot; Douglas
fir, 24to 27 cents a foot;
and boughs, $3 a bale.
Forester Gilden said these
prices were subject to change
depending on competition.
The 1962 Christ mas season
‘saw 3,620,000 trees on the
California market, 2,670,
000 of themimports, Gilden
reported. Number one source
of imports was Washington. .
followed by Oregon, Montana, and British Columbia.
