knowledged as the outstanding
Small City newspaper in California.
"It is an honor that we of the
Nugget staff appreciated. We also
feelit carries a responsibility for
us to live up to the highest in
journalistic standards. ”
The CNPA committee of judges
that selected the Nugget as an
"excellent example" of a small
city weekly newspaper commented onthe reasons which led to the
award.
The Nugget has, they said,
"Good editorial treatment, mechanical excellence, variety of
news coverage, excellent editorial space and treatment of the advertising content is handled with
better than average judgment and
taste. "
Editor Thompson pointed out
this week that the award was the
result of efforts of the entire staff

Nugget publisher Alfred Heller
commented, “I'm really happy
about the award because it represents the judgment of our peers in
the newspaper business that we are
meeting the highest professional
standards in journalism. We
thought the Nugget was good.
Now we know it is. On behalf of
the hard-working Nugget staff I

Last year, in its first entry in
the CNPA Better Newspaper Contest, the Nugget did not take an
award but did receive mention as
having the fourth best editorial
page among the nearly 1500
weekly newspapers in California.
The Nugget's editor this week
emphasized that the Merit Award
was especially noteworthy because it came after only four years
of offset press operation in Nevada City; because it was won dur‘ing the newspaper's second year
of competition in the CNPA contest; and because it was awarded
during the Nugget's first year of
production with a compact format.
The Nugget converted to its.
compact size last June. Details of
the new format were worked out
by Thompson and Heller. David
Osborn and Charles Woods of Nevada City's Osborn/Woods Studio
designed. the new flag and many
of the running heads.
