Sierra Favored At Winter Carnival ~~ SIERRA COLLEGE SKI TEAM,..Always a threat and usually the best in intercollegiate skiing competition in the Far West Ski meets is Sierra College's skiteam, despite the fact that the two-year college competes with four year institutions. The Wolverines have already won their own Northern California Intercollegiate Invitational meet by downing Nevada, Chico State and College of Siskiyous. Left to right are Bob Forster, Truckee; Bob Seals of Chester; Sam Medford of Truckee; Dennis Ludlow of Roseville; Helge Ronnestad, Thor Mjoene and Kristian Guttormsen, all living in the Auburn area, but Norwegian-born; and Coach Paul Chesney. Not shown are Phil Bernhardt of South Tahoe; Bob Hobbs of Truckee and Kent Bocks of Roseville. Out for the season is Walt Hamilton, considered Sierra's number three man, Hamilton broke a leg during Christmas skiing. Sierra College's ski team will be favorites to defeat host University of Nevada in the annual Winter Carnival snow show, with the collegians battling it out in four major events, giant slalom, slalom, jumping and cross counSPORTS While Sierra and Nevada are . conceded the top spots, muchimproved Stanford, Chico State Arizéna State, Utah State, Air Force, Oregon and Cal will also compete, as will girls teams from several colleges. The girls will vie in the annual "powder puff derby" slalom. Sierra's girls will include Ginni Holman, Jan Fischer and Lynn Giavannonni. Norwegian-born ski stars are expected to take the spotlight for both Sierra and Nevada. honors in the Far West Governors cup action two weeks ago. Phil Bernhardt, Bob Seals, Sam Medford and Bob Forster give the Sierrans balanced strength in both Alpine and Nordic events. Coach Paul Chesney expects to enter the satne seven men in the Portland State Winter Carnival in two weeks, a competition entered last year by 200 schools. Sierra won the Nordic competition last Wolverines To Tangle With Yuba ‘rhe second and final round of Golden Valley Conference basketball action begins Friday, Feb. 14, when Sierra College's Wolverine cagers travel to Marysville to tangle with Yuba College. The Sierrams pre~ viously defeated Yuba on the Sierra Court and will be favored. Three of the five remaining conference contests will be played at home, with an away contest at tough Marin College. A back to back invasion of Shasta and College of Siskiyous willoccupy the Sierra gym Feb. 28 and29.
