No jobs available
on Alaskan pipeline
The construction of the
Alaskan pipeline has not begun
and many people have found
that there are no jobs in Alaska
after having made the trip to the
far north, reports the Alyeska
Pipeline Service Company.
The company reports that as
many as 600 persons travel to
the state each month in search
of construction work on the
pipeline. Most of these people,
however, are disappointed and
many families find themselves
stranded, cold and homeless
without prospect of relief.
The Alyeska company has
started a campaign to inform
people of the job shortage in
Alaska but, says the company,
. “Many hundreds still learn the
truth too late and often
tragically.”
Construction on the pipeline
has not begun, stresses the
company, and will not until,
many outstanding legal and
administrative hurdles are
crossed. When the construction
does commense contracts will
‘be awarded to various construction companies that will do
the work. Alyeska requests that
persons interested in working on
the project contact the companies that receive bids to do the
work, not the Alyeska company.
The company concludes. by
saying: “Above all, we recommend that no one come to
Alaska in search of a job. Job
seekers should be certain before
coming that jobs are available
here for them. The unemployment rate in the state is the
highest in the nation. The
winters are the longest and the
most severe. Furthermore,
there is an Alaska law giving job
preference to Alaskans.’”’
