NEVADA CITY---Personnel of the Tahoe National Forest have completed
their work plans for the most
extensive tree planting program in its history,
The plans call forthe
planting of 928, 000 trees on
2,133 acres of land. All
planting will be done this
spring just assoon as the soil
condition and the weather
are right to yield the highest possible survival,
Tree plantingneeds on
the T ahoe Forest are very
large due to the sewere fires
of 1959 and 1960. Just as
soon asthe harvesting of the
burn timber is completed,
the Forest prepares the area
for planting.
The planting job will be
done mostly by private contractors who will bid on the
job for various planting
areas, Forest personnel will
plant some areas using
planting machines of several
types. Close supervision will
be given all work crews to
assure that each tree is properly planted and thereby
has the maximum chance
for survival,
Planting oftrees in the
T ahoe forest area must be
carefully done if the tree
seedlings are to survive the
long rainless summer period,
The time of planting must
be precise in that enough
moisture must be in the soil
to permit the tree roots to

start growing tmmediately,
The trees must be planted
to a proper depth and the
soil firmly tamped so that
the roots will not dry out.
Trees planted are all
grown in forest service nurseries fromseed stock gathered in the same growing
areas in which the seedlings
are to be planted. Professional techniques are followed from the seed collection stage to the final planting stage in doing this essential Forest Service work.
