Feb. 141973 Five Lakes to remain wilderness A decision by Forest Service management to retain a roadless wilderness in the Granite Chief area was upheld by the Secretary of Agriculture. The area in question is Five Lakes Basin. The Squaw Valley Development Company had appealed the decision of the Chief of the Forest Service on November 1, 1971. The company wanted to link Squaw Valley with Alpine Meadows, both ski areas, through Five Lakes Basin. The Chief’s decision was in accord with those of the Supervisor of Tahoe National Forest and the Regional Forester, California Region, in maintaining the ‘Granite Chief area. The Secretary stated that the Forest Supervisor’s decision was consistant with a survey report on the best uses of the area.
