2 North Star Project (continued from page 1) Hear about what North Star’s doing out at Cherry Creek Acres? “Oh sure,”’ you'll Say..‘‘there’s a service station and some kinda store, and a few people live out there..but what’s that got to do with this North Star thing? It’s only a few miles out of Grass Valley on Highway 49 South, but it’s a far out experience that has a lot to do with the North Star Project; just as the Project has everything to do with ‘it.”’ The story has numerous ramifications, but we’ll try to prune it down to the nitty-gritty of a project destined to provide a “deeply meaningful ‘‘experience in living’’ for some great kids .. most ‘of whom have had it far rougher than any of us will ever know before they found North Star. € Through earlier stories and advertisements in The Union, you’ve heard of Dr. William Mansdoerfer and the North Star Project its intensive training and communications center, the Conference Lodge and the Academy occupying buildings and ‘grounds of the old North Star Mine on Old Auburn Road. There, boys and girls from 13 to 16 years of age may attend academic or vocational classes in a non-denominational high school designed to _ give Christian direction to seeking youth. About half a year ago, Mansdoerfer and his associates .. numbering 30 or so and all unsalaried . took over the lease on > the Cherry Creek Acres service station and general store and that’s where the newest “‘action’’ is for the Project. This reporter visited the new ~ addition one day last week and . North . Star 2 Wed. found it difficult to leave the. good company of its managers __ and operators Bill and Betty Harvey and Paul and Diane Carbin. Harvey is on leave from the California Highway Patrol «” temporarily. He and Betty arein © charge of the ‘‘Toot and Tote” x grocery and the=<‘Country Emporium”’ two stores under one roof. Paul and Diane, who live on the property, are in charge of the service station. The store and service station will be used as an ‘‘on the job” training adjunct to the North 3 Star Academy .. for a hopefully long line of ambitious young folk who want to learn about the } business world so that they may eventually meet life completely on their own. in this” new project unit they will be given expert training, under ; pleasant circumstances, in the } business of earning a satisfactory and honorable living for themselves and their future families. The Harveys and the Carbins are contagiously enthusiastic about their long, unsalaried days on the project .. which began last June for Paul and Diane and in October for Bill and Betty. As Betty puts it .. “It took Dr. Mansdoerfer’s faith in us and lots of God’s help to get it underway, but we are very
optimistic about the whole thing now.” = ~ Heart campaign off to a good start ~The campaign of the Heart Association’s sweethearts, Richard and Cathy Womack was off to a fine start when a donation arrived as a memorial gift in the name of Robert Kelley. The friends of Kelley’s son, who is a cadet at West Point, pooled their friendship and resources to send the gift of $200 from Co. H-4, USCC, U.S. Military Academy. Foremost aim of the cochairmen Womacks is to educate the people of Nevada _ county on the grave importance of prevention of the biggest . killer of all — heart disease. To help the Sacramento YoloSierra Heart Association in this effort, a fund drive is being: conducted throughout the month of February. Assisting will be Lou Isselin and Levi Swift. More than 85 persons attended the recent panel discussion on recognition of heart ailment, when Drs. Bob Roberts, Alfred Erickson and George Jewett each gave revealing accounts.of symptoms of heart disease, then discussed preventive measures. A diet that is primarily free of animal fats and cholesterol, one in which fish and fowl are featured more than red meats, and a program of prudent exercise will go far to help prevent stroke, artery and heart disease. Smoking has proved hazardous, but there has been inadequate research with coffee to determine how much danger, if any, is involved in the beverage. Stress, obesity, high blood pressure and smoking are direct contributors to heart ailments, the diseases that kill three times more persons annually than the next greatest threat, cancer. Symptoms to not ignore include prolonged pressure and pain that may or may not begin in the chest, may spread to shoulder, arms, neck, jaw and back. The patient may sweat profusely, feel. nauseous to the point of vomiting, and feel extended shortness of breath. There may be dizziness, and the victim may erroneously feel he has a severe case of indigestion. The symptoms usually come and go, with no pattern or apparent provocation. It is imperative that such patients see a physician at once. Anyone who wishes to obtain ‘information on heart and stroke signs or prevention, may write ‘ec the Association at P.O. Box 16011, Sacramento, 95816. There is no charge. The year round memorial gift program is handled by Willard Rose at Bank of America in Nevada City. Checks may be sent to his attention. A card with the donor’s name is sent to the family of the person rememPow. RESIDENTS PACK cookies for Nevada county servicemen serving overseas, a monthly task which is completed by dozens of local people. The Grass Valley Soroptimists donated funds to Operation Cookie in January, the funds to be used for postage. The amount of postage necessary to send the many cans of cookies overseas each month is considerable and is accomplished through such donations as the service club women made recently. How to lower your winter PG&E bill 6068-1273 despite your horoscope. This horoscope indicates why your PG&E bill is higher. But here’s how you can lower it, no matter what your sign: Insulate walls and ceilings. Weatherstrip windows and doors (and keep them shut). Pull drapes at night, but let the winter sun in during the day. Close fireplace damper when not in use. Turn off lights not needed. Lower furnace setting at night and when you’re out.
