Cyril Moore and family received a surprise visit from his mother-in-law, tler husband Frank Guidera, and son Frankie, 7, accompanied Mrs, Judy Guidera. The Guidera family drove to Penn Valley all of the way from Tujunga (in the San Fernando Valley) just tospend most of Sunday, Frank is a high-income truck driver. During this visit, they saw their newest grandchild, Gregory, only two weeks of age. Judy had, not seen her daughter, Darla Lee, for almost three years, ‘Mrs, Guidera was so impressed and pleased by this community that she expressed a desire to come here and live, in the very near future. Her trip included dinner at the fabulous new Empress restaurant. She was much impressed with the garden and the decorations: It is surely steeped in the culture and history of the East she says. Many of the decorations were over 100 years old. The wooden pieces were all made in Tai Wan and are made entirely without. nails, The Chinese Year of the Ram started on the 9th of February and Mr. and Mrs. H. K. Wong, son Wesley, and their friend Mr. Chop stopped by to say. “Gung Hay Fat Choy” (Happy New Year) to Mrs, Fay. Mr. Wong is a newspaper man and Furniture Store owner and Mr. Choy is.an Architect, both of San Francisco, They were particularly interested inthe Chinese history here in Nevada County. . We owe much of our irrigating system and ‘many of the dry laid stone fences found here.about to the early Chinese miners, Our visitors were drawn to the beautiful white marble ceremonial alter in the Chinese cemetery in Nevada City. They were. also interested in the bits of old Chinese culture owned by Mrs. Helene. Hurlbut of Rough and Ready and-the old Chinese cemetery records preserved by Mr. Bergemann since 1800, They found the Grass Valley Joss House, restored and on view in the Museum in Nevada City, fascinating. Mrs, Fay is trying to locate other Chinese culture in the county
which they may enjoy on future visits, *s* 2 &© & & *& Eight committee chairmen presented their proposals and budgets to the Rough and Ready. Chamber of Commerce Board meeting last Thursday. This resulted in the ordering of stationery with a design symbolizing old gold mining days and in ordering Highway signs carrying out the’ same theme, These signs and a Rough and Ready Brochure will be done in time tocommemorate the Secession of Rough and Ready from the Union on April 7, 1850, On behalf of Leonard Sauer and George Brooks who found the ore from Nevada City's Gold discovery of recent date, Colonel John L, Clark, Nugget Editor presents the specimen to Bob Gates, representing the Nevada County Historical Society.Mr, Willis Perry our Gounty Board. representative reported on the County Chamber meeting. Other Board members participating were Helene Hurlbut, Dale Hdines,. and Jack ” Bixler. Officers conducting the meeting were Fay Dunbar, Bill Thomas, and Helen Avery. There were just a “bushel” of questions needed -answering, Of particular importance was information on forming a Fire District, .We: all developed a much clearer understanding of the workings of a political Fire District. The Board has decidedto recommend to the people of the area that they form such a district, First the Board feels it is the best way for the district to get good consistent fire protection. Also that spreading the cost over such a broad base makes it easier on everyone's pocketbook and more equitable. " The Society is now engaged in an investigation of the feasibility of obtaining a site fora modern museum, Finance Plans for Nevada _ Theatre Studied Fund raising plats for wetting the balance desperately needed to complete the first phase of. financing of the Nevada Theatre Building are being made by the Finance committee headed by Colonel John: L, Clark of the. Nugget and Mrs. Kimary Stevenson of Grass Valley. It is hoped that certain items of general interest to members and to people interested in the restoration of the old Nevada City landmark will be ready. for publication next week. There are several ideas currently being discussed that should help in the program, More than $20, 000 will be needed during the next two months which sum together with the’ money already in the bank will enable theLiberal Arts Commission to exercise its option on the building and make basic improvements so that the building can be put touse before the spring influx of visitors begins, ; One of the ideas constantly stressed is that the Finance committee desires to reach everyone in our area for a contribution’ aside from the membership dues. Three contributions were received during the week from interested people who live as far away as San Jose. The Committee is hopeful that people ‘will send in their contributions as soon as possible, Checks may be made out to the Liberal Arts. One of the outsta ing circus aerial acts i world will be presented within the next twomonths to thé people of the City. Profits from this show will go into the fund, according to Colonel Clark, under whose auspices the act will come to Nevada City. The entire membership of the Liberal Arts Commission and its governing board are determined that this great opportunity to bring a great theatre to Nevada County will not be missed. President Del Pharis told the Nugget this week, Scouts Announce Chairmen Clay Caldwell of Grass Valley announced last week that two men have been appointed to the chairmanships of two vital Scout committees; Mr. Caldwell, who is the finance chairman for the Western Nevada County area, explained that Mr, Richard Stearns of Grass Valley has been appointed as Chairman of the GrassValley finanée Drive. Mr, Stearns has had a good experi-" ence with scouting in the past and has promised that ‘the Finance campaign, scheduled for early Match, will be one that ‘the people of Grass Valley can be proud of, Caldwell went on to say that the chairman for the Nevada City area is Mr. Elton A, Tobiassen, Mr. Tobiassen has been a longtime resident of the area, Mr, Caldwell stated that Mr. Tobiassen was contacted and readily agreed to spearhead the Scout drive in Nevada City. Caldwell indicated that he knew that the two communities would go all out tosupport these. men who believe that Scouting can help make our communities a better place to live,
