This reveiw announced last week by the departments of Employment and Industrial Relations, Continuing expansion in the state's economy lowered the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate to 5.4 percent, Albert B. Tieburg, director of employment, announced, The January rate was down from 6.3 percent a year ago and 5.7 percent in December. The California unemployment rate has been trending downward since last July,
and is now at the lowest level since April 1960, The number of unemployed totaled 458,000 in January, 62,000 below a year ago when 520,000 were jobless, The increase of 47,000 from December was less than seasonal, Ata January total of 6,871,000 --a record for the month-civilian employment in the State topped the year-ago total by 306,000 or 4,7 percent, for one of the largest job increases of recent years, according to Ernest B. Webb, director of industrial relations, Although this gain is measured from a flood-depressed employment level a year ago, Webb pointed out that even with this factor discounted, the margin of employment growth continued to widen from the year-earlier level. Excluding agriculture, lumber, construction, and related indus-~ tries most affected last year by floods, the total January -toJanuary increase in the remaining categories was in the neighborhood of 275,000 to 280,000. Unemployment Shows Marked Decline Leading the over-the -year growth were government, manufacturing, and services » each posting increases in excess of 60,000, Practically all manufacturing categories reported gains, with the largest individual increases in aircraft and electronics, Between December and January, total employment declined in accordance with seasonal influences, but the reduction was smaller than usual at this time of year.
