Fellersen
To Seek
New Term
Nevada County Superintendent
of Schools, Edward G, Fellersen,
announced late last week that he
will be a candidate forre-election
in the June primary.
He has held the office of County
Superintendent since 1958. Prior
to that time he served in the
Grass Valley School District for
18 years as teacher, principal,
and supervisor.
During the past seven and one
half years, he has worked to
improve basic education as well
as the economical operation of
school districts throughout the
county. Since 1961 he has encouraged the systematic teaching
of phonics in the classroom, This
was based on the desire to improve
reading ability in all students, as
well as to improve their ability
to spell, A handbook on how to
teach phonics is now available
to all teachers,
With the assistance of the
county auditor and the county
treasurer, the “Contra Account
System" was made available to
allschool districts. This permitted school boards to reduce
the amount of reserves to be
carried forward each year and
increased the amount of interest
retumed to them for use in their
budgets, Considerable saving of
tax dollars has resulted from the
Ed Fellersen
pool purchase of standard school
supplies through the county superintendent’s office,
In announcing his candidacy
Friday, Fellersen pledged his
continuing effort to support and
assist teachers, administrators,
and school boards in meeting the
educational problems of Nevada
County,
Ed Fellersen, as he is known to
his friends, has been a resident of
Nevada County since 1940,
During World War II, he was an
electronics technician with the
5th Air Corps, being stationed at
Biak Island, the Philippines,
Okinawa, and finally in Japan.
Union School in Penn Valley were held last Friday morning.
